On this page, list the 8 career competencies and using the STAR (Situation Task Action Result) method, explain how/where you developed this competency.
For those that you do not have a good example for, hypothesize how you might gain this skill... for example to gain leadership experience I will volunteer to be the team leader during my next group project.
Proactively develop oneself and one’s career through continual personal and professional learning, awareness of one’s strengths and weaknesses, navigation of career opportunities, and networking to build relationships within and without one’s organization
I pride myself on looking at the big picture and trying to make connections between ideas I find that this helps me bring experience from previous positions to adapt and address current problems. I am always looking for new ways to learn and grow, adding new skills and refining old ones.
Situation: I needed to be able to communicate with students in order to support them successfully. I also needed to understand that each student has a different background and different needs.
Task: There was not a good method in place so I decided to lean on my previous marketing experience to asses the the audience needs and design a new "student portal"
Action: I did some benchmarking research at what information is included on other schools' websites, I met with the campus stake holders to get buy in. I leveraged my relationship with the digital portfolio specialist. I asked my work study student to show me how to use canva.
Result I designed a site that students actually use in a way that they could access on their phones, and I put in place feedback and review processes to continually update it.
Demonstrate the awareness, attitude, knowledge, and skills required to equitably engage and include people from different local and global cultures. Engage in anti-racist practices that actively challenge the systems, structures, and policies of racism.
When I was Assistant Director of Global Learning, I partnered with Campus Ministry Leadership team to co-lead a group of students on several Alternative Spring Break Trips to the US/Mexican border. We spent a week meeting with groups on both sides of the border learning about immigration policy, human rights, education, healthcare, social justice, economic and political issues. We spent time in direct service and also listening to various ideas to gain perspectives on the global inter-connectivity of our two nations.
I made a special effort to make sure that each student had a chance to share about their experiences. We examined our own individual and collective privilege in light of the lived experiences of the different groups we met. I found that in leading these discussions I was also able to further my own anti-racist work and my understanding of systemic inequities. While I have made the trip several times, I have been humbled each time by how diveristy work is never complete. This perspective has helped me to create space in my classes for different identies and perspectives.
Recognize and capitalize on personal and team strengths to achieve organizational goals.
My first year teaching at Dominican I was able to shadow Dr. Denise Lucy in her MBA Leadership Theory class. I learned that in the BSB we define leadership as the ability to ethically motivate and inspire a group of peorple to achieve a comon goal. This made a lot more sense to me than some of the earlier Leadership theories that assume leaders are born and not made. Since then, the many years I have spent teaching leadership theory and organizational behavior has confirmed that leaders can indeed be made or developed... leadership can be taught!
Research shows us that true leadership does not come from a job or position we hold, but from our values beliefs and actions. It follows that the moments where I feel that I have shined as a leader have meen as a member of a team. I approach my work as an integrative coach and professor with the goal of helping others understand their potential. In order to taech someone how to be engaged, I have to practice being engaged in verything I do.
Build and maintain collaborative relationships to work effectively toward common goals, while appreciating diverse viewpoints and shared responsibilities.

When we think of professionalism, we often think of dressing and speaking a certain way. However being a professional is much more about how you behave.
