About our House System

The House of the Year contest at Duke of Kent School fosters a healthy competitive spirit and sense of community among the students and staff that belong to the four Houses. It encourages the students to be their ‘best selves’ as each reward, like merits and commendations, earns points for their House.  A wide range of activities and competitions are on offer to enrich the school experience, develop a sense of identity and belonging, and celebrate achievements that will live long in the pupils’ memories. Our House system includes all learning types and caters to many interests.  There are several events and activities for the pupils to participate in, ranging from sporting events, including football, netball, cross country and sports day; Performing Arts, House Music and House Drama and Cross-Curricular events, such as Bake Off and House quizzes.

Since the school’s founding in 1976, the Houses were known as Armstrong, Chichester, Hillary and Whittle to acknowledge the achievements of those four men who left a lasting impact on the world. In 2021 the school community was involved in a renaming process to find four new names that reflect the world we find ourselves in. After a series of votes and focus groups, Birds of Prey was chosen due to the reference to the natural beauty and biodiversity of the Surrey Hills, as well as the School's close history with the RAF. Since September 2021, the Houses are now known as Buzzard, Hawk, Kestrel and Peregrine.
