What the Law Says

State of Maine Law requires that all students in the class of 2021 and beyond meet certain standards to graduate. The 8 content areas to be met are:

  • Mathematics*
  • English/Language Arts*
  • Science and Technology*
  • Social Studies*
  • Health and Physical Education
  • World Languages
  • Visual and Performing Arts
  • Career Education

*Students in the class of 2021 and following must meet these content standards. Students in the class of 2022 and following must add one of the remaining content areas each year until the class of 2025, which must meet content standards in all areas.

In addition, schools must certify that students have met the Guiding Principles, which are:

  • Students must be a clear and effective communicator
  • Students must be a self-directed and lifelong learner
  • Students must be a creative and practical problem solver
  • Students must be a responsible and involved citizen
  • Students must be an integrative and informed thinker.
