Text Coding is a strategy your child can use while reading any type of fiction or nonfiction text (brochure, article, short story, poem, novel, etc.). The strategy allows your child to make his or her thinking during reading visible to you or a teacher.
Sample Steps to Follow When Practicing at Home
1. Model for your child when it is appropriate to use each of the symbols in the chart.
2. Explain that using the symbols will help your child pay attention to his or her own understanding while reading.
3. Your child will draw the symbols in the margin at each point where his/her thinking fits into one of the categories.
4. If your child cannot write on the reading passages (for example, a textbook) draw the symbol on a small sticky note and place it alongside the appropriate part of the passage.
"Fluency is defined as the ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression. In order to understand what they read, children must be able to read fluently whether they are reading aloud or silently. When reading aloud, fluent readers read in phrases and add intonation appropriately" (Reading Rockets https://www.readingrockets.org/helping/target/fluency).
Fluency packets for grades 6-8 and 9-10 are provided below. Instructions for using the packet are found on the first page.
