IEP (Individualized Education Plan)
If a student is not able to access general education material with Tier 1 or Tier 2 supports, an IEP may be recommended
The School Psychologist uses standardized tests to assess students' cognitive functioning, processing abilities, and social emotional functioning
The Special Education Team will use standardized tests to assess the students' academic capabilities
Depending on the referral concern, other special services team members (e.g. Speech Therapist, Occupational Therapist) may also use standardized tests to determine need for other supports
Based on the results of testing, a student may qualify for special education services and receive an IEP
The IEP is a legal document that includes individualized accommodations, goals, services, specific dates and durations of services, and procedures for evaluating whether or not criteria for goals have been met
An IEP meeting is held each year to review how the student is progressing towards their goals, however a parent or IEP team member can request a meeting at any point
The student is reevaluated every three years
504 Plan
A 504 plan ensures that a student is able to access their education but is not as formal as an IEP
An evaluation for a 504 would also include standardized tests, usually in the form of rating scales that are filled out by the students' parents and teacher
The plan would likely include different accommodations, supports, or services and list who is responsible for providing each service
