Classroom of the Future

Photo by Barry Zhou on Unsplash

This site contains information and resources designed to promote educators thinking of what trends in education might be emerging. How might they then best prepare for these trends?

Resources (Great sites to prompt further research and thinking)

Tech Trends (What's new, what's emerging?)

Pedagogy (Practices to promote future students' needs)

Emotional Design (Colours, furniture, spaces and architecture)

Technological Design

Building Design (Colours, spaces, furniture and architecture)

Student Voice (How do students participate in their learning?)

Imagine if you will, a peek into a future classroom. Does it have four walls? Is there a teacher in the front of the IWB directing learning? Are the students busy with photocopied sheets? Can you see a group of students with goggles on exploring a distant galaxy or walking virtually as an insect around the Australian bush? Is there a robot helping students understand a difficult topic?

"With society becoming more and more reliant on technology, it is incumbent upon leaders to harness the power of digital technologies in order to create school cultures that are transparent, relevant, meaningful, engaging, and inspiring."

Eric Sheninger - Pillars of Digital Leadership (2019)

What might a classroom of the future contain? What innovative and progressive ideas and spaces and pedagogical approaches will the students of today need in their tomorrows?

We're not just talking gadgets and the latest in AI and robotics (although we will include some emerging tech). But what pedagogical practices will our students benefit from? What spaces will encourage our students to thrive? How will spaces be designed to create environments that are environmentally friendly, physically stimulating as well as promoting physical and emotional wellness? How might global warming impacts such as floods and bushfires and pandemic events impact on our models of education?

Will the classroom of the future be same old same old with a splash of bright paint, a new IWB and devices for all and space to move a few chairs around?

Or is there more to your classroom of the future?

"We wanted to create a space students would run to"

Kristy Kendall - Principal, Toorak College

This innovative building included many design features to ensure it hit the brief of the Toorak College community.

The National Education Summit is proud to be working with Digital Learning and Teaching Victoria to bring to you the Classroom of the Future.
