Kim Atienza's Fight for Health Awareness

Not everyone who enters the entertainment business remains in the entertainment sector. Beyond just drawing in viewers, some people use their platform to make an impact. For instance, Kim Atienza, popularly known as "Kuya Kim," is a well-known Filipino television host for his entertaining and educational shows. He uses his platform to share interesting facts about science, animals, and health. Along with his television career, he is a devoted family man and passionately advocates for health. He demonstrated that a healthier lifestyle is achievable with determination and self-control by turning his attention to fitness and well-being after overcoming health challenges (Mariano, n.d.). Kim Atienza's battle with Guillain-Barré Syndrome and stroke changed his perspective on health, inspiring him to promote affordable healthcare and a healthier way of living. His experiences with life-threatening illnesses made him recognize the importance of accessible healthcare, which inspired him to utilize his platform to inform and motivate Filipinos to put their health first. His advocacy aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 3, emphasizing that good health is a right rather than a privilege and highlighting the need for equal access to quality healthcare.
Atienza is known for his engaging presence on television and dedication to health and fitness, resulting from surviving diseases that were two near-death experiences (Tuazon & Tuazon, 2022). According to Reyes (2022), Atienza admitted that he underestimated the physical demands of managing multiple TV shows despite his background as a bodybuilder during the '80s. These health struggles made him realize the importance of taking better care of himself, leading him to stay active through biking, running, and swimming (Cruz, 2022).
Atienza’s mild stroke in 2010 became a life-changing experience that deepened his faith and commitment to personal growth. Fortunately, he did not experience any physical effects from the stroke, although it did cause temporary memory loss in the left frontal lobe of his brain. He recovered 70% of his memory in three days, with the remaining portion being recovered through rehabilitation (Andrea Andres & Andrea Andres, 2022). This health scare was a turning point in his life, making him reflect on the importance of well-being. During this time, he grew closer to God, praying for healing and promising to become a healthier and better version of himself physically and in how he treated those around him. His journey reflects the gospel value of faith, showing how trust in God can inspire personal growth and positive change.
He emphasizes that regular physical activity strengthens the body and reduces the risk of future strokes, particularly for middle-aged individuals, after noticing that many stroke survivors avoid exercise due to fear or misconceptions (Wang, 2024). Engaging in activities like biking, running, and swimming helped him regain his strength, making him the healthiest he has ever been and reinforcing his belief in the benefits of an active lifestyle (Andrea Andres & Andrea Andres, 2022). This experience motivated him to make better health choices and encouraged others to prioritize their well-being (Reyes, 2022).
Unfortunately, Atienza faced another challenge in 2013 when he was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome, a rare autoimmune disorder that attacks the nerves and leads to paralysis. At first, he assumed he was experiencing another stroke after losing movement in his fingers and feet; he later received a confirmed diagnosis and underwent immediate treatment with Intravenous Immunoglobulin, a costly medication (Katz, n.d.). While he had the means to afford the treatment, the experience opened his eyes to the struggles of many poor Filipinos; he became aware of how financial barriers prevent people from receiving necessary medical care, often leading to worsening conditions or even death. This realization deepened his understanding of the country’s healthcare inequalities and strengthened his commitment to advocating for accessible and affordable treatment for all (Andrea Andres & Andrea Andres, 2022).
With this, Atienza firmly believes that healthcare, such as essential medicines, should be accessible to everyone, even those struggling with the high costs of medical treatment. As an advocate for affordable medicine, he actively supports initiatives that help Filipinos find budget-friendly healthcare options. As the Watsons Philippines' Vitamin B Complex ambassador, he promotes the Switch and Save campaign, which awares people on affordable alternatives to expensive medications (Purnell, 2024). His personal experiences, surviving a stroke in 2010 and being diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome in 2013, made him more conscious of his health, leading him to prioritize regular exercise and proper nutrition. He highlights the importance of vitamins, particularly Vitamin B Complex, in maintaining overall well-being and preventing illnesses, especially as people age and require more nutrients (Santos, 2022).
In addition, he also emphasizes the importance of maintaining our overall wellness through proper nutrition, supplements, and regular exercise, especially as people age (Wang, 2024). While he believes that getting nutrients from food is ideal, he highlights the benefits of supplements like Vitamin B Complex, which was recommended to him after being diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome to help improve his system (Santos, 2022). He also emphasizes the importance of staying active, particularly for aging individuals, as he follows a strict fitness routine to maintain strength, mobility, and overall well-being (Wang, 2024).
Beyond simply advocating for a healthier lifestyle and cost-effective healthcare, he voluntarily uses his personal health journey as a platform to educate and guide others, embodying the gospel value of Service. By openly sharing his struggles and lifestyle changes, he raises health awareness, encourages a healthier lifestyle, and demonstrates his commitment to serving others through inspiration.
Atienza’s advocacy for affordable medicine supports Sustainable Development Goal 3, which promotes good health and well-being for all. By endorsing Watson’s affordable alternatives, he helps Filipinos save up to 80% on essential medications and supplements, reducing the financial burden on low-income families. This is especially vital in the Philippines, where 53.7% of healthcare expenses are out-of-pocket, and medicine costs account for 33% of the country's Total Health Expenditure, making treatment inaccessible for many (High Cost of Medicines in the Philippines, n.d.). The effectiveness of this advocacy is evident in consumer research, shown in Unknown (2017), which reveals that eight out of ten shoppers preferred Watsons' own-brand products over more expensive alternatives, demonstrating that they provide the same or even better quality at a significantly lower cost.
Through his advocacy, he not only brings attention to the difficulties that many Filipinos encounter with accessing healthcare, but he also offers an achievable solution that improves the accessibility and affordability of high-quality medications, helping to promote good health and well-being.
By advocating for equal healthcare access, Atienza is pushing for change in a system that often benefits only the wealthy. His efforts help raise awareness about the struggles of the poor and encourage action toward making healthcare more accessible and fair for everyone, regardless of financial status. Through his partnership with Watsons, Atienza continues to empower Filipinos to prioritize their health without the burden of excessive medical costs.
Furthermore, he also advocates for physical activity, which plays a crucial role in maintaining good health and well-being, as nearly 40% of Filipinos lack sufficient exercise, a rate higher than the global average of 31%, putting them at greater risk of developing severe health conditions such as heart disease, strokes, diabetes, dementia, and cancer (Star, n.d.). Initially believing that his background in bodybuilding was enough to keep him healthy, he later realized the importance of overall fitness, which motivated him to encourage Filipinos to adopt an active lifestyle through activities like biking, swimming, and other forms of exercise, highlighting its long-term benefits in preventing chronic illnesses (Wang, 2024). His advocacy spreads awareness and serves as a concrete example of how physical activity can enhance the quality of life, demonstrated by his transformation into the healthiest version of himself while helping reduce healthcare burdens.
Atienza seeing this reality is significant to me as a student as he highlights the social inequalities in healthcare and the need for change. Through conflict theory, he shows how society is divided between the wealthy, who can afford quality medical treatment, and the poor, who struggle to access even basic healthcare. His own experience with a mild stroke and Guillain-Barré Syndrome made him realize this gap. He was able to recover because he could afford expensive treatments, but many Filipinos don’t have that same privilege. Knowing this, he advocates for affordable healthcare and encourages an active lifestyle, understanding through structural functionalism that these efforts help improve the well-being of Filipinos and contribute to a healthier, more stable society. He inspires me to be more socially aware of the challenges people face, such as accessing healthcare and encourages me to engage with important social issues actively.
In conclusion, Atienza’s advocacy for cost-effective medicine and an active lifestyle sheds light on the healthcare problems in the Philippines. His journey, from overcoming life-threatening illnesses to championing accessible healthcare, emphasizes the importance of prioritizing our health while also recognizing the struggles of others. His story reminds us that health should not be a privilege but a right that everyone can access regardless of financial status. More than just inspiring people to lead healthier lives, he uses his platform to push for meaningful change, proving that awareness must go hand in hand with action.
Atienza not only took charge of his health but also turned his experiences into an opportunity to help others avoid the hardships he faced. By advocating for preventive healthcare, he encourages people to take proactive steps to maintain their well-being rather than waiting until illness strikes. As students, we must take responsibility for our health early on, understanding that prevention is always better than cure. However, taking care of ourselves is only one part of the solution. We should also advocate for policies that make healthcare more accessible to all. Like Atienza, I aim to work towards personal growth and use my voice to raise awareness and contribute to positive change in our country.
