Kim Atienza, a well-known politician turned television personality, has been open about his family’s life and dynamic, emphasizing how familial connections shape one’s career and opportunities, using his own as a clear example. Connecting to decent work and economic growth, his family’s influence led him to a political career, whereas their support led him to transition to television. His shift from being a politician to becoming a television personality demonstrates family influence shaping career paths, giving opportunities, values, and connections contributing to career growth. This serves as a representative case of the phenomenon that family plays a crucial role in shaping career paths and contributing to SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, because of Kim’s family influencing his decision to become a politician, and later switch to a career in television. Furthermore, this showcases the role of family networks in shaping economic financial progress and access to decent work, in alignment with SDG 8. Family is the basic unit of society, playing an important role in maintaining social stability and personal well-being (B.T., 2021). This can later influence people’s work ethic, choices in career path, and financial decisions in their adulthood. With this, supportive familial connections, such as Kim Atienza’s, have a positive impact on both the aspects of Sustainable Development Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth in the Philippines. Moreover, this kind of familial support contributes to decent work and economic growth, through shaping career paths and job opportunities, which both play an important role in developing the economy.
Kim’s family background has played a role in his ability to explore various career paths, ranging from politics to television, highlighting the apparent influence of family on one’s career choice. The Atienza family has been known to be politically active and involved, with three of Kim’s family members being examples of this. To begin, he is the eldest son of Lito Atienza, who was the Mayor of Manila (1998-2007), Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources (2007-2009), Buhay Party-list Representative (2013-2022), and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (2020-2022) (Vote Pilipinas, n.d.). Moving onto his siblings, Arnold Atienza served as a councilor for Manila’s 5th District and Maile Atienza too served as a councilor, but for Manila’s 3rd District. Chi Atienza, Kim's youngest sister, was initially set to run for Manila councilor under Mayor Honey Lacuna's ticket, but was later chosen as Isko Moreno’s vice mayoralty running mate. This shows how their family’s political involvement reflects their political influence, carrying on their legacy of public service in Manila. Additionally, besides showing general political influence, familial connections in politics can create opportunities for public office, supporting the idea that family backgrounds impact career paths.
Proceeding to his change in career paths, Kim had revealed that he no longer found himself happy and passionate about his career in politics and that he was only doing it for his family, specifically his father, before shifting to a career path in television. After deciding to choose a career in television over politics, his father acknowledged that it gave him the freedom to pursue his personal interests and hobbies (Malaya Business Insight, 2024), suggesting familial understanding and support for his decision. This shows the rich history of political involvement in the Atienza family, how it influenced Kim Atienza’s career path and choices, and the importance of familial support in choosing a career path. His overall transition from being a politician to becoming a television personality shows the importance of family influence and support to one’s career path. This being said, he was encouraged to pursue his interests and hobbies through his career in the media, which means contributing to decent work in society and economic growth through the creation of job opportunities and driving innovation in the industry, referencing SDG 8.
Advancing to the topic of decent work, strong familial values help instill financial discipline, assisting individuals in contributing to national economic stability in relation to SDG 8, putting emphasis on the economic impact of financial support. Different family structures like single-parent households, sibling influences, and the involvement of extended family members, all affect financial literacy and behaviors. In connection to Kim Atienza, his successful career is able to reflect how supportive family dynamics play a role in one’s career and financial stability. His professional accomplishments suggest the possible influence of a stable familial environment regarding financial literacy and responsible decision-making.
Additionally, recognizing and supporting the family’s role in financial education can improve individuals’ abilities to navigate financial issues and achieve economic well-being (Asadi, Yousefi, & Mahdad, 2024). Financial discipline is crucial for job creation and economic growth, as it teaches individuals about responsible money management, strategic resource allocation, and ensuring long-term stability and resilience (Quadient, n.d.). This implies the significance and relevance of financial education and discipline in achieving decent work, striving towards economic growth. Furthermore, Ullah & Yusheng (2020) emphasize that financial socialization within the family, such as parental guidance and discussions regarding financial means, is important, because it impacts financial behaviors and attitudes. In support of this, insights from a study by Brooks and Wheeler (2022), highlight the importance of considering both individual financial stressors and relationship dynamics when addressing financial management behaviors. With all of these aspects being considered, the point that strong familial values help inculcate financial discipline, assisting people in becoming a part of national economic stability, in alignment with SDG 8 can be considered and acknowledged.
Moving forward, when families highlight work-life balance and fair labor practices, they create a workforce valuing ethical labor conditions, focusing on the relationship between work-life balance and decent work. Findings from research conducted by Carlson, Kacmar, and Thompson (2020) suggest that fostering healthy family environments is able to enhance work and family balance, benefiting not only employees, but also their colleagues, furthermore promoting a more positive and productive workplace and environment. This means that employees are more likely to experience reduced stress and improved focus at work, enhancing both work productivity and job satisfaction. A workplace example demonstrating this is companies that allow their employees to work more flexible hours, giving room for them to balance both their work life and personal life, while still maintaining productivity and focus. It also contributes to a more stable and efficient labor market and supports economic growth. A good example of this is how Kim Atienza is able to balance having a successful career in media, while also being open about his family life, reflecting the benefits of a balanced work and family dynamic. His experiences as both a husband and father himself, support the idea that fostering a healthy family environment enhances professional success, contributing to a more positive and productive workplace, in alignment with the previously mentioned findings.
On top of this, achieving a proper work to family balance leads to multiple benefits, like an increase in job satisfaction, enhanced productivity, and improvement in overall well-being for employees. Acknowledging the consequences of a work to family imbalance, these adverse effects could include heightened stress levels, burnout, and reduced organizational commitment (Kozjek, Stare, & Tomaževič, 2024). The positive effects of achieving a proper work to family balance result in higher efficiency and an improved workplace environment, therefore supporting economic growth through ensuring a consistent and productive labor market.
In the context of fair labor practices, equally dividing and sharing labor or tasks in a relationship or household holds importance in maintaining a healthy dynamic (Suttie, 2019). This can later evolve and expand to the workplace, highlighting the importance of fair labor practices and equality. Through promoting equality in task distribution at home, a sense of fairness and collaboration at work is fostered, improving employee work ethic and productivity, and contributing to ethical working conditions and long-term economic stability, aligning with SDG 8.
On top of this, issues surrounding the adverse effects of the lack of familial support to people’s career paths and work ethic are addressed through Kim’s experiences. His lifestyle and openness about his family’s dynamic demonstrate a healthy environment that fosters a work-life balance and its positive effects, especially contributing to elements of decent work and economic growth. This furthermore creates an impact on the community, by showcasing an example of how supportive familial connections play a role in the career growth and development of individuals, the significance of family influence and teachings on people’s financial decisions and literacy, and the utter importance of a work-life balance. Expanding even more, the gospel value of compassion is seen through his experience of having supportive familial connections, which is demonstrated through his parents’ reaction to his change in career path. All of these aspects support and encourage decent work and economic growth, striving for the betterment of the dynamic of our society.
Highlighting the importance of supportive familial connections, like Kim’s, and the role they play in having a positive impact on SDG 8 in the Philippines, the significance of decent work and economic growth to the country’s development can be acknowledged. Decent work and economic growth lessen poverty through raising job opportunities and income levels, improving living standards, and reducing inequality (Close the Gap Foundation, n.d.). Relating to the previously mentioned points, family, the basic unit of society, plays a significant role in influencing one’s career trajectory, emphasizing the importance of strong familial connections, while still acknowledging the negative effects of familial connections that are not as strong. Along with this, supportive familial connections can further expand to impact decent work and economic growth in the Philippines, taking note of values and teachings that families share with their children and accentuating their role in contributing to SDG 8.
In conclusion, supportive familial connections, like Kim Atienza’s, positively impact SDG 8 in the Philippines through shaping career paths and contributing to decent work and economic growth. Moreover, familial support impacts financial literacy, job opportunities, and career growth. They demonstrate powerful family influences in shaping individual career paths, along with broader economic outcomes. However, it is also important to acknowledge how strong family networks and influences do not always positively shape careers, as factors like unwanted pressure exist. Nevertheless, when families instill important values like financial literacy, work ethic, and a sense of balance and equal work distribution, they create a resilient, productive, and principled work environment. Kim’s ability to have a work-life balance with strong familial connections reflects how this support leads to greater professional stability and positive dynamics in the workplace. It highlights the key role that families play in fostering decent work, economic growth, and overall sustainable development. To further promote SDG 8, it is crucial to encourage policies that advocate for family-friendly labor practices, such as paid parental leave and flexible work arrangements. Ultimately, recognizing and strengthening the role of supportive familial connections in career growth can serve as a basis for achieving SDG 8 and fostering a more balanced, fair, and productive work environment.
Kim’s advocacy contributes to my personal growth, empathy, and societal role, by emphasizing the importance of supportive familial connections and relationships on how one grows in terms of their career path. He highlights the significance of family teachings and influences on the behavior and decisions of individuals, especially in terms of financial literacy and decisions. As a student myself, I know that I still have a lot to learn. Through recognizing the importance of my own family’s support and connections, I can acknowledge how they shape me and teach me, as I continue to grow and develop, not only as a student, but also as a person. It also teaches me to be more empathetic, because I can also acknowledge that not everyone has the same opportunities and familial support that are needed to contribute to decent work and economic growth, fulfilling the career paths that they desire. Through this, I am taught to be grateful for what I have, as there are individuals who do not experience the same familial support and connections that I am privileged to have. Lastly, it shapes my societal role, by teaching me the significance of supportive familial connections on one’s career path, as previously mentioned. This being said, I am able to utilize and take advantage of the opportunities given to me with my supportive familial connections, and strive towards my goal of pursuing my future career in immigration law.
