Hazel T. Biana is a faculty member at De La Salle University in Manila, and a Research Fellow at the Southeast Asia Research Center and Hub (SEARCH) and the Social Development Research Center (SDRC). Her research encompasses feminist philosophy, gender studies, and cultural criticism. She has published works that extend the feminist theories of scholars like bell hooks, addressing topics such as intersectionality, online feminism, and the importance of feminist critical thinking.
Additionally, Biana is an active member of the Global Feminist Artificial Intelligence Research Network, where she explores feminist perspectives in technology. Her interdisciplinary approach combines feminist theory with practical applications, aiming to address and challenge various forms of oppression in contemporary society.
Beyond her academic publications, Dr. Biana has received several grants to support her research and initiatives. Notably, she was awarded the 2021 Hypatia Diversity Grant for the Gender Turn PH project, which aims to promote gender-related research in philosophy in the Philippines. She has also led projects such as Reclaiming Filipino Indigenous Cultures through Teaching and Learning and Justice in a Cup: A Linguistic Phenomenological Study of Fair Trade Coffee Farming Experience in the Cordilleras, demonstrating her commitment to integrating philosophical inquiry with social and cultural issues . In 2024, she received a grant from the International Development Research Centre, Ottawa, Canada, to pilot test SafeHer: A Women Mobility and Empowerment App with the hope of curbing transit violence against women through artificial intelligence.
