Mathematics is a discipline that uses abstract concepts such as numbers, symbols, and formulas to study the relationships and properties of objects and their patterns. According to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, mathematics can be defined as:
"The study of patterns and relationships among quantities, numbers, and shapes, and the use of symbols and models to represent and understand mathematical concepts and solve real-world problems." (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, 2000)
Definition of Patterns. In math, a pattern is described as a sequence of repeated objects, shapes, or numbers. Any kind of event or thing can be connected to a pattern. A pattern has a rule that identifies the items that are part of the pattern and those that are not.
Rules of Patterns - A specific set of rules must be taken into account in order to create a full pattern. In order to apply these rules, we must first comprehend the nature of the sequence and the distinction between the two successive numbers provided in the pattern. After making some educated guesses, we verify that the rule holds true for the entirety of the pattern.
The patterns can be formed using three categories:
Repeating Pattern - A repeating pattern is one in which the rule continues to happen over and over again. Letters and shapes are typically common.
2. Growing Pattern - A growing pattern is one in which the numbers are arranged in increasing order or where each successive number is larger than the one before it. For instance: 10, 20, 30, 40…
3. Shrinking Pattern - The numerals are arranged in a shrinking pattern, meaning each number is smaller than the one before it. as in 40, 30, 20, 10…
Types of Patterns:
Shape Pattern - A shape pattern is a pattern or sequence that involves a collection of shapes that are repeated. Shape patterns repeat themselves in a specific order or series of shapes. Simple geometric figures like circles, squares, rectangles, triangles, etc. may also be used, as well as more complex ones like arrows, flowers, moons, and stars.
2. Letter Pattern - A sequence that consists of letters or English alphabets is known as a letter pattern. All the letters are related to one another according to a letter pattern.
As you can see, one letter has been removed after every alphabet.
3. Number Pattern - The number pattern, in which a list of numbers follows a specific order based on a rule, is the most prevalent sort of pattern in mathematics.
Solved Examples:
Complete the pattern: 20, 24, 28, 32, ___, ___
Solution: 20 + 4 = 24, 24 + 4 = 28, 28 + 4 = 32, 32 + 4 = 36, 36 + 4 = 40
Answer: 32 = 4 = 36, 36 + 4 = 40
Complete the pattern: ZY, YX, XW, WV, ___, ___
Solution: The first phase consists of the first and second alphabets together. The second term consists of the second and third alphabets together. The combination of the third and fourth alphabets is the third word. Combining the fourth and fifth terms results in the fourth term.
