On February 11, 1861, Severino Reyes was born in Sta. Cruz, Manila. His parents were Andrea Rivera and Rufino Reyes. He married Maria Paz Puato, a buddy from his youth, and they were blessed with 17 kids.
His early education was received in a facility overseen by Catalino Sanchez, and he completed his undergraduate studies in the Escuela de Segunda Enseñanza of Colegio de San Juan de Letran. At the University of Santo Tomas, he resumed his studies to get a degree in philosophy. He spoke Tagalog and Spanish well and had a basic understanding of Latin, Greek, Hebrew, and numerous languages of the Philippines. He was a well-read man who could have intelligent conversations on religion, philosophy, history, literature, the arts, and sciences.
For his literary prowess, Severino Reyes is a highly well-known and respected figure. In fact, he is regarded by many as the father of Tagalog zarzuelas and Filipino plays. In addition to these accolades, he is also our beloved "Lola Basyang." He is the creator of the well-known "Mga Kuwento ni Lola Basyang" Liwayway series. He produced 26 zarzuelas and 22 plays during his time in service. He is a playwright and dramatist in addition to being a writer.
