Georica Gholson, PhD
Division 35 within the American Psychological Association is an organization that I am enthused to be a member of given its commitment to advancing feminist issues within psychology and in the public arena. I want to further that mission as a Division Representative to the APA Council. One of my goals is to advance initiatives that support and fund opportunities for women, especially women of color and sexual minorities, to get quality mentorship. Far too often, women of color and sexual minorities experience gendered racism as well as heterosexism that contributes to being underrepresented within our field. I will use my position to offer a safe space to discuss these issues through programming and initiatives using an intersectional framework. Secondly, in recent years, sexual trauma has been a topic in mainstream media. Despite survivors publicly sharing their stories, society continues to misunderstand the impact of sexual trauma has on the lives of survivors and how socialization around gender and sex sustain a culture of sexual trauma. As the Division Representative, I will elevate psychological research that helps society have a more nuanced understanding about the prevention and characteristics of sexual trauma. Lastly, most women, regardless of their relationship and parental statuses, struggle with trying to hit the moving of target of having a work-life balance that impacts the physical, mental, and emotional health of women in psychology. I want to use my position to advance initiatives that assist women in hitting this target without sacrificing our health in the process.
