Successful completion of the programme to receive the award of BSc (Hons) in BIM (Digital Construction) requires collection of 60 prescribed European Credit Transfer System credits at level 8.
All modules are graded out of 100 and the overall classification of the award is calculated as show here.
Typically, assessment includes multiple items (e.g. work on a model, a technical report, contribution to a forum, etc.) and all items must be attempted for successful completion of the module. This is specified in the Assessment and Module Assessment Thresholds sections of the module descriptor, available here.
It is very important that every student makes themselves familiar with the assessment requirements of each module that they undertake.
Example rubrics for assessment are shown below but individual modules may present students with alternative rubrics:
Assessment is typically based on coursework and continuous assessment and there are no mid- or end-of-term examinations.
Assignments typically fall due mid-module and/or within 1-2 weeks of the end of the module. As the modules are typically delivered over 4-week or 8-week blocks this means that the requirement to deliver on self-directed learning is continuous. The exact submission dates will be communicated by the module lecturer via the Brightspace or the relevant Google Site.
The continuous nature of assessment must be built into your planning for successful participation in and completion of the programme, as deadlines for submission will be strictly enforced.
Feedback on assignments will be provided within 2 weeks of handup (unless exceptional circumstances occur). This feedback must be used by students to improve subsequent assignments and submissions.
Assessment Criteria: Written and Orally presented submissions (example)
Assessment Criteria: Project submissions (example)
There is no guarantee of progression from the BSc (Hons) in BIM (Digital Construction) to the MSc in aBIMM or any other programme upon successful completion of the programme. At present, applications must be made as per the standard application requirements for postgraduate students. This will be examined with the University's finance and admissions offices post-validation.
Late submissions of assignment are only allowed with the permission of the relevant lecturer and the submission of the TU Dublin's Personal Circumstances 1 form with supporting evidence.
Pressure of work is not a valid reason for use of a Personal Circumstances Form. Details of valid cases for extensions / exceptional consideration are provided on the above form.
The Chaplaincy office may be able to assist with the preparation and submission of deferral and personal circumstances forms.
Late submissions are handled through TU Dublin's Personal Circumstances progress detailed here.
The implications of late submission without valid reason (i.e. because of reasons detailed as not acceptable on the institute's Personal Circumstance 1 form linked above) are both academic and financial.
When registering for supplemental assessment, an appropriate fee must be paid as detailed at: http://dit.ie/currentstudents/studentservices/examinations/examinationstimetables/supplementalexaminations/
The Work-Based Learning module is pass / fail only, any late submission will result in the module being recorded as Refer in the standard academic session. This will be permanently recorded on your Student Transcript.
When Personal Circumstances forms have not been used, penalties are applied as a % of the awarded grade as follows:
Up to 1 week: less 10%
More than 1 week: maximum grade 35%
The results of each assessment element are combined using the weightings defined in the module descriptors and compensation between elements of a single module applies if the specified thresholds have been met.
If, after combination of elements, the 40% pass threshold has not been met in a module, when your results are issued by the Examinations Office in June / July, you will receive a Supplemental Exam Form and you are required to follow the instructions for registering as detailed at: http://dit.ie/currentstudents/studentservices/examinations/examinationstimetables/supplementalexaminations/. As this is one-year programme has a January start, you will need to confirm the dates if you need to apply for Supplemental Exams because, although our programme has no examinations, the repeat assessments are handled under TU Dublin's Supplemental Examination process.
Students wishing to request a re-check, re-mark, or appeal are referred to TU Dublin's standard procedures at: https://www.dit.ie/examinations/requestare-checkre-markorsubmitapc1form/
If you fail to reach the required standard for passing a module, you can repeat that module at the next available sitting (typically the supplemental period in Autumn).
The exception to this is the Federated & Validation and Work-Based Learning modules. In F&V, if the referral is deemed by the lecturers to be the result of inadequate participation in the team-based requirements of the module, the student is required to internally repeat the module during the next academic session. Referral in the Work-Based Learning module will result in the student needing to take alternative (from the electives list - see here) modules in the next academic session.
A maximum of 3 repeat attempts is permitted for modules where external repeats are allowed.
2 repeats are allowed for modules with only internal repeat options.
In any module, if a student has not reached the required standard after reassessment during the supplementals, the module must be repeated as an External or Internal repeat as detailed at: http://dit.ie/currentstudents/studentservices/examinations/howtorepeat/
Internal repeats require the approval of the School because of the resource implications (i.e. is sufficient space available in the class).
If you register to repeat externally, you must record that registration with smdt.adm@tudublin.ie and contact the associated module lecturer as soon as possible to ensure that sufficient time is available to successfully complete the assessment, which may be different from the assessment that was set at the original sitting and/or supplemental).
