Goodness!  It seems it's been a bit since our last update.  The time sure has gone by quickly!

¡Madre mía! Parece que ha pasado bastante tiempo desde nuestra última actualización. ¡Cómo pasa el tiempo!

We have continue learning about letters and sounds, including those of Nn, Oo, Dd, and Cc.  We have been both encoding (putting sounds together) and decoding words (segmenting sounds) and have really come so far!  We continue to practice our letter sounds.  The more fluently these come to us, the easier it is for us to decode and read words.  We have also been practicing letter names as well. Again, the fluency in these helps us with spelling and writing.  It is so amazing to see the confidence of your Kinder's grow when we have been writing words together.  Thank you for working with your Kinder at home, it really shows in the classroom!  In addition to letters and sounds, we have been discussing how rules at home are different than those at school.  We have also been writing sentences, and becoming more comfortable sounding out words on our own.  We continue to practice drawing, gaining confidence with adding detail and carefully coloring in our illustrations.

Hemos continuado aprendiendo sobre las letras y sus sonidos, incluyendo los de Nn, Oo, Dd y Cc. Hemos estado codificando (uniendo sonidos) y decodificando palabras (segmentando sonidos) ¡y hemos avanzado muchísimo! Seguimos practicando los sonidos de las letras. Cuanto más fluidos los dominemos, más fácil nos resultará decodificar y leer palabras. También hemos estado practicando los nombres de las letras. Una vez más, la fluidez en estos nos ayuda con la ortografía y la escritura. Es maravilloso ver cómo crece la confianza de sus hijos de kínder cuando escribimos palabras juntos. ¡Gracias por trabajar con sus hijos de kínder en casa, se nota mucho en el aula! Además de las letras y los sonidos, hemos estado hablando sobre cómo las reglas en casa son diferentes a las de la escuela. También hemos estado escribiendo oraciones y sintiéndonos más cómodos al pronunciar palabras por nuestra cuenta. Seguimos practicando el dibujo, ganando confianza al agregar detalles y colorear cuidadosamente nuestras ilustraciones.

In Math we continue to work closely with numbers and their formation to ten.  We are learning that we can group numbers (five and some more, and even ten and some more).  We have been discussing patterns of adding one and of taking one away.  We continue to tell math stories and to practice writing numbers.  

En matemáticas seguimos trabajando estrechamente con los números y su formación hasta el diez. Estamos aprendiendo que podemos agrupar números (cinco y algunos más, e incluso diez y algunos más). Hemos estado hablando sobre patrones de suma y resta de uno. Continuamos contando historias matemáticas y practicando la escritura de números.

We have welcomed Ms. Rylee into our classroom.  She comes to us from St. Cloud Technical School.  She is wanting to pursue a career working with children.  She is a graduate of Albany HIgh School, and has worked in the Montessori setting in Avon.  They kiddos love to see her each day!

Le hemos dado la bienvenida a la señorita Rylee a nuestra clase. Viene de la Escuela Técnica de St. Cloud. Quiere dedicarse a trabajar con niños. Se graduó de la Escuela Secundaria de Albany y ha trabajado en un entorno Montessori en Avon. ¡A los niños les encanta verla todos los días!

Thank you for sending all the warm clothes with your Kinder.  We try to have each child dress themselves, which means it is easier to zip jackets before mitten/gloves are on.  Thank you for helping us with this by practicing with your Kinder at home.  We love to spend our time outside, and the faster we are at dressing, the more time we get! :)

Gracias por enviar toda la ropa de abrigo con su hijo/a. Intentamos que cada niño/a se vista solo/a, lo que facilita abrochar las chaquetas antes de ponerles los guantes o manoplas. Gracias por ayudarnos practicando con su hijo/a en casa. ¡Nos encanta pasar tiempo al aire libre, y cuanto más rápido nos vistamos, más tiempo tendremos! :)

I very much enjoyed meeting with you at conferences.  If there are some things you would like to discuss, please don't hesitate to give me a call or send an email.  I also want to share how much I appreciate all you do at home. Your Kinders are truly fantastic little humans... thank you for sharing them!

We made it through today with the fantastic and creative help of many volunteers, thank you!  It was so fun to see the Kinders all dressed up today and excited to see their friends' costumes.  We had many choices for stations today during our celebration, ask us about them!  We had an Eyeball Bounce, a Pin the Face on the Pumpkin, a Spider Relay race, Apple Stack, Bingo, Twirly Ghost, playdough and color sheets.  In the afternoon we read with flashlights in a dark room and we watched Room on the Broom.  

¡Lo logramos hoy gracias a la fantástica y creativa ayuda de muchos voluntarios, muchísimas gracias! Fue muy divertido ver a los niños de kínder disfrazados y emocionados por ver los disfraces de sus amigos. Hoy tuvimos muchas estaciones de juego durante nuestra celebración, ¡pregúntanos sobre ellas! Tuvimos un juego de saltar globos oculares, ponerle la cara a la calabaza, una carrera de relevos de arañas, apilar manzanas, bingo, un fantasma giratorio, plastilina y hojas para colorear. Por la tarde leímos con linternas en una habitación oscura y vimos la película "La escoba voladora".

In Language Arts this week we learned about the letters and sounds of Ff and Ii.  We made some fun crafts in class and found many words that have both letters in them.  We continue to write about the letters and are practicing not only writing carefully, but are trying to add detail to our pictures as we draw.  We are careful about coloring in the lines and making sure we are using our strong finger muscles to do this.  It isn't uncommon for a Kinder's hand to become sore with coloring.  This is a sign that we have worked some muscles more than normal, but this also will help us to become stronger writers.  When we are comfortable with our pencil grip and our control over our writing tool, our brain can more easily focus on the other componenets of writing: sounds, spaces, upper vs. lower case letters and words.  There are so many pieces to writing...and they all contribute to helping us retain knowledge!  

Esta semana, en Lengua y Literatura, aprendimos las letras y los sonidos de Ff e Ii. Hicimos manualidades divertidas en clase y encontramos muchas palabras que contienen ambas letras. Seguimos escribiendo sobre las letras y practicamos no solo escribir con cuidado, sino también añadir detalles a nuestros dibujos. Nos aseguramos de colorear dentro de las líneas y de usar bien los músculos de los dedos para hacerlo. Es normal que a los niños de kínder les duelan las manos al colorear. Esto indica que hemos ejercitado algunos músculos más de lo normal, pero también nos ayudará a escribir mejor. Cuando nos sentimos cómodos sujetando el lápiz y controlando la herramienta de escritura, nuestro cerebro puede concentrarse más fácilmente en los demás componentes de la escritura: sonidos, espacios, mayúsculas y minúsculas, y palabras. ¡La escritura tiene muchos aspectos... y todos contribuyen a que retengamos el conocimiento!

In Math this week we have been working on those numbers,  We are becoming more confident and comfortable representing each number and have been practicing the correct number formation.  If you get a chance at home...count, count, count!  Count steps up and down, into and out of the house, the number of windows, doors, etc. on cars/homes/campers you come across.  Helping your kiddo understand the concept of more or less using these as tools is helpful for them as well.

Esta semana, en matemáticas, hemos estado trabajando con los números. Cada vez nos sentimos más seguros y cómodos al representarlos, y hemos practicado la forma correcta de escribirlos. Si tienen un momento en casa... ¡cuenten, cuenten, cuenten! Cuenten los escalones que suben y bajan, que entran y salen de la casa, la cantidad de ventanas, puertas, etc., en los autos, casas o caravanas que vean. Ayudar a sus hijos a comprender el concepto de "más" o "menos" usando estas herramientas también les será útil.

We continue to practice using our words in school.  Emotions can run high during the day, so it is super helpful if a kiddo is able to express what is making them sad/mad/bouncy.  We try to help kiddos through these emotions and give tips as to how to regulate them. 

Seguimos practicando el uso de las palabras en la escuela. Las emociones pueden ser intensas durante el día, por lo que es muy útil que un niño pueda expresar qué le entristece, enfada o le alegra. Intentamos ayudar a los niños a gestionar estas emociones y les damos consejos sobre cómo regularlas.

With the short week last week, it's been a bit since I have written.  So much is happening!

Con la semana corta de la semana pasada, hace tiempo que no escribo. ¡Están pasando tantas cosas!

In Language Arts we have learned about the letters and sounds of Tt and Pp.  Your creativity is fantastic!  We love to see all the fantastic ideas of helping us to celebrate the letters and sounds in the classroom.  Kiddos are able to make connections faster when they can connect the letter sounds to something they are wearing or with which they have had experiences.  For example, we had so many kiddos wear something to school that had the sound /p/ in it!  We saw princesses, planets, pumpkins, pink, purple....  the kiddos love to see each other and what they may have.  They then are able to find and connect things with that sound.  We had an interesting discussion on how the letter Pp doesn't even sound like its normal sound in pterodactyl.  It's super rewarding and fantastic to see that light shine in your Kinders' eyes when they make that connection!  We played with pom poms, puzzles, and played new games with our friends.  We had some help-thank you Ms. Amanda!- learning new games and it was positively perfect (see what I did there?).  We also have been reading--yes, you read that right!--words with the sounds we have already learned.  We read words like map, tap, pat, am, at.  We read these in additon to our heart words and had a great discussion on rhyming words and how they often have the same spelling patterns.  

En Lengua y Literatura hemos aprendido sobre las letras y los sonidos de la Tt y la Pp. ¡Vuestra creatividad es fantástica! Nos encanta ver todas las ideas geniales que nos ayudan a celebrar las letras y los sonidos en el aula. Los niños aprenden más rápido cuando pueden relacionar los sonidos de las letras con algo que llevan puesto o con lo que han tenido experiencias. Por ejemplo, ¡muchos niños vinieron al colegio con algo que contenía el sonido /p/! Vimos princesas, planetas, calabazas, rosa, morado... A los niños les encanta verse entre sí y ver lo que llevan puesto. Así pueden encontrar y relacionar cosas con ese sonido. Tuvimos una interesante conversación sobre cómo la letra Pp no suena igual que en "pterodáctilo". ¡Es súper gratificante y fantástico ver cómo se les iluminan los ojos a los niños de kínder cuando hacen esa conexión! Jugamos con pompones, puzles y juegos nuevos con nuestros amigos. Contamos con ayuda —¡gracias, Sra. Amanda!— para aprender juegos nuevos y fue todo un éxito (¿lo pilláis?). También hemos estado leyendo —¡sí, has leído bien!— palabras con los sonidos que ya hemos aprendido. Leemos palabras como «map», «tap», «pat», «am», «at». Las leímos además de las palabras que ya conocemos y tuvimos una interesante conversación sobre palabras que riman y cómo a menudo comparten patrones ortográficos.

In Math this week we have been learning about number stories as well as numbers that have groups of five in them.  We have been sequencing numbers and playing games (Trash/Garbage, Top It) that help us reinforce our math concepts.  We also had a discussion on how cool it is in math that there are so many patterns, even in our number grid!

Esta semana, en matemáticas, hemos estado aprendiendo sobre historias numéricas y números que se agrupan de cinco en cinco. Hemos estado ordenando números y jugando a juegos como «Basura» y «Supera esto» que nos ayudan a reforzar nuestros conceptos matemáticos. También hablamos de lo fascinante que es en matemáticas la gran cantidad de patrones que existen, ¡incluso en nuestra cuadrícula numérica!

In SEL we continue to talk about respect this week.  We are getting used to the idea of sharing when we see respect.  We are working hard to earn a Bucketfiller Party.  We just have a few more puppy paws to earn!

En SEL seguimos hablando de respeto esta semana. Nos estamos acostumbrando a la idea de compartir cuando vemos respeto. Nos esforzamos mucho para ganarnos una Fiesta de Llenar el Cubo. ¡Solo nos faltan unas cuantas patitas de cachorro para conseguirlo!

Thank you so much for helping your Kinder learn their lunch number!  So many of us no longer needing help typing it anymore..woohoo!  The next task that would be helpful is to help your Kinder become independent at dressing for the outdoors.  Zippers and snaps can be tricky for little fingers, so extra practice at home is helpful.  Students feel a sense of pride when they can do things independently :) (and we have the added benefit of getting out to recess faster!).  This will help us lots when snowpants, hats and mittens come into the mix.  

¡Muchísimas gracias por ayudar a tu hijo/a de kínder a aprender su número de almuerzo! ¡Muchos ya no necesitamos ayuda para teclearlo! ¡Genial! La siguiente tarea que sería útil es ayudar a tu hijo/a de kínder a vestirse solo/a para salir. Las cremalleras y los broches pueden ser complicados para los deditos pequeños, así que practicar en casa es muy útil. Los alumnos se sienten orgullosos cuando pueden hacer las cosas solos :) (¡y además salimos al recreo antes!). Esto nos ayudará mucho cuando llegue el momento de usar pantalones de nieve, gorros y manoplas.

Wow!  We sxpanded our minds this week...so much to learn! :). With Homecoming thrown into the mix, you all were fantastic with letter sounds, dress up days, and photo days.  Thank you for helping our learning!

¡Guau! Esta semana ampliamos nuestras mentes... ¡hay mucho que aprender! :). Con el regreso a casa incluido, todos estuvieron fantásticos con los sonidos de las letras, los días de disfraces y los días de fotos. ¡Gracias por ayudarnos a aprender!

In Language Arts this week we learned about the letters and sounds of Mm and Ss.  We We talked about how to make the two sounds and about how to write them. We are trying to do both together to create that connection.  The letter s is a tricky letter to write, so we practiced this one lots.  We also are using handwriting paper and this is new for most of us.  As we finish up our writing, we like to look back at our work to determine which one is our favorite.  We also talked about "heart" words.  these are words that we have to learn "by heart" since they don't follow the rules we are learning for reading.  For example, the word "the" has 2 sounds but has 3 letters.  The /th/ sound is irregular, and the /e/ sound actually sounds like a short vowel u!  We will practice these each day in addition to our letter sounds and names.  We switched into our Walk to Read groups this week as well.  We have been learning the names of the kiddos and have been working closely with letter sounds.

Esta semana, en Lengua y Literatura, aprendimos sobre las letras y los sonidos de Mm y Ss. Hablamos sobre cómo se forman y escriben los dos sonidos. Intentamos hacer ambas cosas a la vez para crear esa conexión. La letra s es difícil de escribir, así que la practicamos mucho. También usamos papel para escribir a mano, lo cual es nuevo para la mayoría. Al terminar de escribir, nos gusta repasar nuestro trabajo para determinar cuál es nuestro favorito. También hablamos sobre las palabras "de corazón". Estas palabras debemos aprenderlas de memoria, ya que no siguen las reglas que aprendemos para leer. Por ejemplo, la palabra "the" tiene dos sonidos, pero tres letras. El sonido /th/ es irregular, y el sonido /e/ suena como una vocal corta u. In Math this week we have continued our learning with patterns, number writing, and number stories.  We have explored different ways to make patterns and talked about how/why they are named as they are.  We continue to practice our routines while counting forward and back each day and sequencing numbers.  

Esta semana en matemáticas, continuamos aprendiendo con patrones, escritura de números e historias de números. Exploramos diferentes maneras de crear patrones y hablamos sobre cómo y por qué se les llama así. Seguimos practicando nuestras rutinas contando hacia adelante y hacia atrás cada día y secuenciando números.

In Social/Science/Health we shared all that we know about Fire Safety.  A BIG THANK YOU to the Albany Fire Department for bringing supplies and a truck to come visit us at the ELC.  We learned the importance of having a fire safety plan, of using smoke alarms, and of knowing that fire fighters are here to help us.  We got to go inside a fire truck today, and see all the very cool nooks and crannies in which the fire equipment is stored.  In the classroom we discussed all we learned, and even practiced crawling and stop drop and roll.

En Ciencias Sociales y Salud, compartimos todo lo que sabemos sobre seguridad contra incendios. MUCHAS GRACIAS al Departamento de Bomberos de Albany por traer suministros y un camión para visitarnos en el Centro de Bomberos. Aprendimos la importancia de tener un plan de seguridad contra incendios, usar detectores de humo y saber que los bomberos están aquí para ayudarnos. Hoy pudimos subir a un camión de bomberos y ver todos los rincones geniales donde se guarda el equipo contra incendios. En el aula, comentamos todo lo aprendido e incluso practicamos gatear y detenerse, agacharse y rodar.

We had a super treat today...some Albany Huskie football players met us at school today to give us high 5s as we walked into the building.  What a super way to start the day!  Thank you Huskies, and good luck in the game tonight!

Tuvimos un regalo increíble hoy... unos jugadores de fútbol americano de los Albany Huskies nos recibieron en la escuela para chocarnos las manos al entrar al edificio. ¡Qué manera tan genial de empezar el día! ¡Gracias, Huskies, y mucha suerte en el partido de esta noche!

We jumped right into things this week!  We continue to talk about Respect as our Charactor Strong trait this month.  We are learning all about respect and trying to show respect in our classroom as well as in our home.    

¡Comenzamos de lleno esta semana! Seguimos hablando del Respeto como nuestro rasgo fuerte de carácter este mes. Estamos aprendiendo todo sobre el respeto y tratando de demostrarlo tanto en el aula como en casa.

In Language Arts this week we learned about the letters and sounds of Aa.  We discussed what our mouth, tongue and lips are doing to help us make the /a/ sound, as well as what our teeth and throat are doing to help that sound.  We discussed how the Kindergarten teachers want us to make the letter a.  We did a variety of activiites to help our brains connect the letter name with the sound it makes.  We daubed the letter, we played with animals, made alphabet puzzles, and tried some new apps on our iPads.  We will being Walk to Read next week and we practiced switching rooms today.  We learned who our teacher will be and what the expectations are for us in those rooms.  We did a fantastic job!  It was super fun to see all the creative ideas to help "celebrate" the letter a.  Many of us wore clothing with the letter Aa on it, and others were able to find pictures of things that begin with a including alligators, Albany Huskies, Adventures, etc.  I can't wait to see what we come up with for the letter Mm and Ss next week!

Esta semana, en Lengua y Literatura, aprendimos sobre las letras y los sonidos de la Aa. Hablamos sobre cómo nuestra boca, lengua y labios nos ayudan a producir el sonido /a/, así como sobre cómo nuestros dientes y garganta contribuyen a ese sonido. Hablamos de cómo las maestras de kínder quieren que formemos la letra a. Realizamos diversas actividades para ayudar a nuestro cerebro a conectar el nombre de la letra con su sonido. Pintamos la letra, jugamos con animales, hicimos rompecabezas del alfabeto y probamos algunas aplicaciones nuevas en nuestros iPads. La semana que viene comenzaremos a leer caminando y hoy practicamos cambiar de aula. Aprendimos quién será nuestra maestra y cuáles son las expectativas para nosotros en esas aulas. ¡Hicimos un trabajo fantástico! Fue muy divertido ver todas las ideas creativas para celebrar la letra a. Muchos de nosotros vestimos ropa con la letra Aa, y otros pudieron encontrar imágenes de cosas que comienzan con a, incluidos caimanes, Albany Huskies, Adventures, etc. ¡No puedo esperar a ver qué se nos ocurre para las letras Mm y Ss la próxima semana!

In Math this week we practiced making different quatities and writing numbers.  As our fingers get stronger it will be easier for us to form those numbers.  We continue to learn tricks such as pointing to numbers as we count them.  We have also learned about patterns.  Patterns can be a combination of letters, numbers, shapes, colors (so many things!) that repeat and continue on.  We spent time looking around our classroom for patterns and for patterns we may find in nature.  We have practiced making patterns with items, sounds, and motions.  

Esta semana en matemáticas, practicamos la formación de diferentes cantidades y la escritura de números. A medida que nuestros dedos se fortalezcan, nos será más fácil formar esos números. Seguimos aprendiendo trucos como señalar los números al contarlos. También hemos aprendido sobre patrones. Los patrones pueden ser una combinación de letras, números, formas, colores (¡tantas cosas!) que se repiten y continúan. Dedicamos tiempo a buscar patrones en el aula y en la naturaleza. We have been recognizing what makes a good friend and showing how we can be a good friend.  We have been trying to say kind things and to make good decisions to be a good friend.  We even shared the toys we brought from home with our friends today at Free Choice.  We were so kind and excited to show our toys!  Thank you for helping your kiddo choose a toy for school today.  We discussed how to have helping hands today.  We even used our helping hands to create smiles for our custodians here at school, Ms. Courtney and Ms. Shelley.  We appreciate all that they do for our school to keep us safe and sound.  Thank you Ms. Courtney and Ms. Shelley!

Hemos estado reconociendo qué hace a un buen amigo y demostrando cómo podemos serlo. Hemos estado intentando ser amables y tomar buenas decisiones para ser buenos amigos. Incluso compartimos los juguetes que trajimos de casa con nuestros amigos de Free Choice. ¡Nos encantó mostrarles nuestros juguetes! Gracias por ayudar a su hijo a elegir un juguete para la escuela. We celebrated Greta today!  We sang to her and listened to her share her All About Me poster.  We asked her questions and then made her a birthday book. Happy Birthday Greta!

¡Hoy celebramos a Greta! Le cantamos y la escuchamos compartir su póster "Todo sobre mí". Le hicimos preguntas y luego le hicimos un libro de cumpleaños. ¡Feliz cumpleaños, Greta!

Wowzers!  What a busy week!  We enjoyed all of it, but I am guessing the Kinders will sleep well this weekend!

¡Guau! ¡Qué semana tan ajetreada! Lo disfrutamos todo, pero supongo que los niños dormirán bien este fin de semana.

We began the week reading about Elephant and Piggie, 2 characters from Mo Willams books.  We enjoyed reading his books and love to see what these 2 friends get into.  We made puppets to retell some of our favorite Piggie and Elephant stories.  We also learned that live theater isn't the same as a movie theater.  The bus ride was a favorite as well... so many Kinders pointed out where their parents worked, where they or their family lived, or where they had vacationed.  It was fun to see the shine in their eyes! We learned that there would be people acting out the roles of these two characters.  We loved meeting some Avon friends on Tuesday at the theater (Avon K was there with us) and we were in awe of the lights, songs, and dances in the performance.  We saw the play with ease and we actually were complimented by the young actors after the play.  We were told we were one of the best audiences they had experienced thus far...what a great compliment!  We ate when we returned from school and were able to enjoy some time outside.

Empezamos la semana leyendo sobre Elefante y Piggie, dos personajes de los libros de Mo Williams. Disfrutamos mucho leyéndolos y nos encanta ver en qué se involucran estos dos amigos. Hicimos títeres para contar algunas de nuestras historias favoritas de Piggie y Elefante. También aprendimos que el teatro en vivo no es lo mismo que ir al cine. El viaje en autobús también fue uno de los favoritos... muchos niños de kínder señalaron dónde trabajaban sus padres, dónde vivían ellos o su familia, o dónde habían estado de vacaciones. ¡Fue divertido ver el brillo en sus ojos! Nos enteramos de que habría gente interpretando los papeles de estos dos personajes. Nos encantó encontrarnos con algunos amigos de Avon el martes en el teatro (Avon K estaba allí con nosotros) y nos maravillaron las luces, las canciones y los bailes de la función. Vimos la obra con facilidad y, de hecho, los jóvenes actores nos felicitaron después de la obra. Nos dijeron que éramos uno de los mejores públicos que habían experimentado hasta el momento... ¡qué gran cumplido! Comimos al regresar de la escuela y pudimos disfrutar de un rato al aire libre.

Wednesday was a different day for us as well.  We had a shortened day so had to adjust our schedule.  The kiddos channeled their inner Pete the Cat when it came to the changes and said "It's all good".  We met our Media Specialist for the district, Ms. Eibensteiner.  She taught us a new place to visit on our iPads and some practical things as well:  how to hold our iPad, how to turn it off and on, and how to handle it safely.  We enjoyed about an hour outside on the beautiful Wednesday, enjoying the walking paths of North Park, nature, and the various play areas.  We loved the tire playground as well as the big playground.

El miércoles también fue un día diferente para nosotros. Tuvimos un día más corto, así que tuvimos que ajustar nuestro horario. Los niños se pusieron en plan Pete the Cat con los cambios y dijeron: "¡Todo bien!". Conocimos a nuestra especialista en medios del distrito, la Sra. Eibensteiner. Nos enseñó un nuevo lugar para visitar con nuestros iPads y también algunas cosas prácticas: cómo sujetar el iPad, cómo encenderlo y apagarlo, y cómo manejarlo con seguridad. Disfrutamos de una hora al aire libre ese hermoso miércoles, disfrutando de los senderos de North Park, la naturaleza y las diversas áreas de juego. Nos encantó tanto el parque de llantas como el parque grande.

Thursday and Friday of this week we discussed apples.  We learned about the parts of an apple, how an apple grows, what senses we use to experience apples (all of them!) and about Johnny Appleseed.  We made a diagram of an apple, and today we painted apple patterns, counted apples and played a dice game.  We especiallly enjoyed apples picked fresh from Greta's trees.  Thank you for sharing, Greta!

El jueves y viernes de esta semana hablamos sobre las manzanas. Aprendimos sobre sus partes, cómo crece, qué sentidos usamos para percibirlas (¡todos!) y sobre Johnny Appleseed. Hicimos un diagrama de una manzana y hoy pintamos patrones de manzanas, contamos manzanas y jugamos a los dados. Disfrutamos especialmente de las manzanas recién recogidas de los árboles de Greta. ¡Gracias por compartir, Greta!

We continue to learn about sounds and the different ways our teeth, tongue, and lips help us to make sounds.  We learn that we sometime use our voiceboxes while other times we do not.  We are also closely examining the was the lines of the letters are made.  We practice mostly by air writing at this time, or by tracing the correct motions on the carpet. Our finger/hand muscles are still developing and this is a super way to do our learning without tiring our hands too much.  We will soon be writing letters on three lines.  It is tricky to remember where to begin our letters when we write and how to correctly form the letters.  We want to create good habits early so it is easier for us to write as we age.

Seguimos aprendiendo sobre los sonidos y las diferentes maneras en que nuestros dientes, lengua y labios nos ayudan a producirlos. Aprendemos que a veces usamos la laringe y otras no. También examinamos detenidamente cómo se forman las líneas de las letras. Practicamos principalmente escribiendo en el aire o trazando los movimientos correctos en la alfombra. Los músculos de nuestros dedos y manos aún se están desarrollando y esta es una excelente manera de aprender sin cansarlas demasiado. Pronto escribiremos letras en tres líneas. Es difícil recordar dónde empezar las letras al escribir y cómo formarlas correctamente. Queremos crear buenos hábitos desde pequeños para que nos sea más fácil escribir a medida que crecemos.

This week in Math we have discussed shapes and compared the value of numbers. We have used cubes to stack and compare amounts and share the difference between the terms "less" and "more".  We will begin writing the numbers 1-5 and that these numbers represent a specific quantity.  We also challenged ourselves to create shapes using sticks, and explaining why it was difficult to make a circle.  Ask us about it!

Esta semana en matemáticas, hablamos de figuras geométricas y comparamos el valor de los números. Usamos cubos para apilar, comparar cantidades y compartir la diferencia entre "menos" y "más". Empezaremos a escribir los números del 1 al 5 y veremos que estos representan una cantidad específica. También nos retamos a crear figuras con palitos y a explicar por qué fue difícil hacer un círculo. ¡Pregúntanos!

Whew, the days go by quickly!  We started our day with our first fire drill.  The kiddos did a fantastic job, knowing just what to do.  We practiced lining up, walking quietly outside, and waiting in our spot for further direction.  We will have several of these throughout the year, and will have a more in depth fire safety unit in October.

¡Uf, cómo vuelan los días! Empezamos el día con nuestro primer simulacro de incendio. Los niños hicieron un trabajo fantástico, sabiendo exactamente qué hacer. Practicamos formarnos en fila, caminar tranquilamente afuera y esperar en nuestro lugar para recibir más instrucciones. Tendremos varios simulacros a lo largo del año y tendremos una unidad de seguridad contra incendios más a fondo en octubre.

In Language this week we are focusing on the letters in our names and how to make them in different ways: with sticks, jewels, beads, and pattern blocks.  We continue to practice our pencil grip and to strenghten our muscles.  Feel free to do some activities at home that will help us increase our writing and coloring stamina.  Some ideas are to play with Legos, to use clothespins with our pincher fingers, to grab small items (pennies, beads) with our pincher fingers one at a time, playdough, and coloring/writing.  Ask me for more ideas!  We continue to practice our alphabet and sounds. We have been learning some fun actions that go with the letters/sounds of the alphabet too.

En Lengua, esta semana nos centramos en las letras de nuestros nombres y en cómo hacerlas de diferentes maneras: con palitos, joyas, cuentas y bloques de patrones. Seguimos practicando cómo sujetar el lápiz y fortaleciendo los músculos. Siéntanse libres de hacer algunas actividades en casa que nos ayudarán a aumentar nuestra resistencia para escribir y colorear. Algunas ideas son jugar con Legos, usar pinzas de ropa con los dedos, agarrar objetos pequeños (monedas, cuentas) con los dedos uno a uno, plastilina y colorear/escribir. ¡Pídanme más ideas! Seguimos practicando el alfabeto y los sonidos. También hemos estado aprendiendo algunas acciones divertidas que van con las letras y los sonidos del alfabeto.

We are practicing our school rules and routines.  We continue to practice waiting our turn to talk, to raise hands, and to take turns with the toys. We have so many stories to share!  If I am unable to hear them all at the rug, I try to catch the stories at Free Choice time.  We have also been focusing on kindness in the school.  We will have some core areas each month or so in which we practice.  This month we will work on showing kindness and respect.

Estamos practicando las reglas y rutinas de la escuela. Seguimos practicando esperar nuestro turno para hablar, levantar la mano y turnarnos con los juguetes. ¡Tenemos muchísimas historias para compartir! Si no puedo oírlas todas en la alfombra, intento escucharlas en la hora de Elección Libre. También nos hemos centrado en la amabilidad en la escuela. Practicaremos algunas áreas centrales aproximadamente cada mes. Este mes trabajaremos en mostrar amabilidad y respeto.

In Math we are learning different ways to make numbers.  We are starting slow, but will continue to use the same technique with bigger numbers before too long.  I sent home a letter explaining a bit of what we are learning.  We showing different ways to make numbers, we are practicing shapes, we are exploring with math tools, and we are going through our shapes each day.  We have started some stations, and these have been focusing on fine motor movement and on working with our peers. We have enjoyed working with pom poms, cutting with fancy scissors and counting items.

En matemáticas, estamos aprendiendo diferentes maneras de formar números. Empezamos despacio, pero pronto seguiremos usando la misma técnica con números más grandes. Envié una carta a casa explicando un poco lo que estamos aprendiendo. Mostramos diferentes maneras de formar números, practicamos formas geométricas, exploramos con herramientas matemáticas y repasamos nuestras formas a diario. Hemos empezado algunas estaciones centradas en la motricidad fina y en trabajar con nuestros compañeros. Hemos disfrutado trabajando con pompones, cortando con tijeras y contando objetos.

We haven't had too much use for sweatshirts and jackets yet, but that will be changing soon as well.  I encourage you to help your child to become independent by zipping/buttoning/snapping their own outerwear.  We are so excited to get outside it can be hard for us to wait me to help all 21 of us!  Also, having your child pack their own folder/backpack is a great skill for them as well.  I know it takes a bit longer to begin with, but in the long run is super helpful.

Todavía no hemos usado mucho las sudaderas ni las chaquetas, pero eso también cambiará pronto. Les animo a que ayuden a sus hijos a ser independientes abrochándose la cremallera, los botones y los broches de su propia ropa de abrigo. ¡Estamos tan emocionados de salir que puede ser difícil esperar para ayudar a los 21! Además, que sus hijos preparen su propia carpeta o mochila también les ayuda mucho. Sé que al principio lleva un poco más de tiempo, pero a la larga es muy útil.

Thursday, September 4th / Jueves 4 de septiembre

Hello!  What a great start to the year we have been having!  Your Kinder has learned so much these past few days. I have truly enjoyed my time with them and am looking forward to a fantastic year.

¡Hola! ¡Qué buen comienzo de año hemos tenido! Tus niños de kínder han aprendido muchísimo estos últimos días. He disfrutado muchísimo del tiempo con ellos y espero que este año sea fantástico.

We have been learning the rules and routines of K, and so many procedures!  Our day starts with a morning meeting where we greet each other.  We go through our calendar and what our day looks like, as well as what the weather is like outside.  We count up how many days we have been in school and review the schedule for the day.  We have been working hard to learn the names of our classmates as well.

Hemos estado aprendiendo las reglas y rutinas del kínder, ¡y muchísimos procedimientos! Nuestro día empieza con una reunión matutina donde nos saludamos. Revisamos nuestro calendario y vemos cómo va nuestro día, así como el clima. Contamos cuántos días llevamos en la escuela y repasamos el horario del día. También nos hemos esforzado por aprendernos los nombres de nuestros compañeros.

We then transition to Language Arts.  This includes a story and some discussion, and later some writing. We go through the letters of the alphabet and say their sounds as well as their names. We will start some listening "games" next week, manipulating the sounds in words and playing with some sounds as well.  We have discussed that we have been reading already!  We can read our names, some letters, and some numbers.  

Luego pasamos a Lengua y Literatura. Esto incluye un cuento, un poco de conversación y, posteriormente, algo de escritura. Repasamos las letras del alfabeto y decimos sus sonidos y sus nombres. La próxima semana empezaremos con juegos de escucha, manipulando los sonidos de las palabras y jugando con algunos sonidos. ¡Ya comentamos que ya hemos estado leyendo! We have met most of our teachers this week.  We have met Mrs. Olson in the Art room, Mr. Kalway in Music, Mr. Folsom in PE and Mr. Sutton in the Library.  We have two helpers as well:  Ms. Carla and Ms. Deb.  We have met Ms. Hoeschen, our interventionist.  She has seen each of us, listening to the sounds we know.  We will meet Ms. Deuel tomorrow for SEL (Social Emotional Learning).

Esta semana conocimos a la mayoría de nuestros profesores. Nos reunimos con la Sra. Olson en el aula de Arte, el Sr. Kalway en Música, el Sr. Folsom en Educación Física y el Sr. Sutton en la Biblioteca. También contamos con dos ayudantes: la Sra. Carla y la Sra. Deb. También conocimos a la Sra. Hoeschen, nuestra intervencionista. Nos ha visto a todos, escuchando los sonidos que conocemos. Mañana nos reuniremos con la Sra. Deuel para la clase de Aprendizaje Socioemocional (ASE).

After lunch and recess we come back to the classroom for some Math.  We have been getting the routines down by counting each day and saying our numbers. We played a new Math game this week, Count and Sit.  We have been practicing our good sport skills during this time as well.  I must say, I am so impressed!  Not one of us was upset at having to sit when we counted the "sitting" number!  We have been exploring at stations this week with play dough, math games, and writing numbers.

Después del almuerzo y el recreo, volvemos al aula para un poco de matemáticas. Hemos estado practicando las rutinas contando cada día y diciendo nuestros números. Esta semana jugamos a un nuevo juego de matemáticas: "Contar y Sentarse". También hemos estado practicando nuestras habilidades deportivas. ¡Debo decir que estoy impresionadísima! ¡A ninguno le molestó tener que sentarse al contar el número "sentado"! Esta semana hemos estado explorando en las estaciones con plastilina, juegos de matemáticas y escribiendo números.

Your Kinder will probably be very tired this week, if you haven't noticed already.  We have been taking a short rest time after lunch each day by listening to a story.  Today we went with two we were so tired!  Thank you for making sure your Kinder has enough sleep at home-it helps us all be our best!

Tu niño de kínder probablemente estará muy cansado esta semana, por si aún no lo has notado. Hemos estado descansando un rato después de comer todos los días escuchando un cuento. ¡Hoy leímos dos cuentos porque estábamos muy cansados! We read about being a Bucket Filler each day. We learned that when we do kind things for others, we "fill" our invisible buckets and we feel good inside.  When we dip from buckets we make others feel bad, and we do as well.  This can look like hurting someone's feelings or doing unkind things.  We are trying to fill our classroom bucket by following directions, saying kind words, and showing that we know the rules.  Soon, you will get Puppy Paws home.  This is when your child was "caught" showing Huskie Pride at school. Celebrate this with them!

Leemos sobre cómo llenar el cubo cada día. Aprendimos que cuando hacemos cosas buenas por los demás, llenamos nuestros cubos invisibles y nos sentimos bien por dentro. Cuando nos hundimos en los cubos, hacemos sentir mal a los demás, y nosotros también. Esto puede parecer herir los sentimientos de alguien o hacer cosas desagradables. Intentamos llenar el cubo de nuestra clase siguiendo instrucciones, diciendo palabras amables y demostrando que conocemos las reglas. Pronto, Puppy Paws llegará a casa. Esto fue cuando a tu hijo lo "sorprendieron" mostrando orgullo husky en la escuela. ¡Celebra esto con él!
