Questions to ask your child before/after reading

Fiction

*What genre is your book?

*What is your book mostly about?

*Have you made any connections to the story? (This could be to a character, to the problem, connecting the story to another story you have read)

*What part of the plot are you in right now? How do you know? (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution)

*What predictions can you make? What from the text makes you think that could happen?

*How have characters changed throughout the story?

*What do you think is MOST IMPORTANT for the reader to understand about your book right now? Why?

*What questions do you ask yourself as you are reading?

*What is the theme of the story?

*What does the author want you to learn from reading the book?

Nonfiction

*Can you summarize what you just read?

*What structure is this book (cause/effect, time order, problem/solution, main idea/detail, categories, narrative nonfiction)

*How did the features of the text helped you understand what was happening (pictures, graphs, charts, diagrams, vocabulary words)

*What do you think the author’s purpose was in writing the book?

*Does the author have a clear bias?
