SCHOOL COUNSELORS

mR. yOUNG

Student Last Names A-Gal (Class of '24 and '25); A-D (Class of '26 and beyond)

Mr. Young joined Belvidere High School in 2016. He has been a school counselor for 17 years, previously working at Central High School in Burlington and was a high school social studies teacher prior to becoming a counselor. Mr. Young earned both his Bachelors and Masters degrees from Northern Illinois University and is a National Certified Counselor as well as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Illinois. What Mr. Young has come to like most about BHS is the strong sense of community among the staff and students. In his free time, Mr. Young enjoys traveling and attending Blackhawks and Cubs games with his wife and daughter. 


mRs. CUSIMANO

Student Last Names Gam-Ln (Class of  '24 and '25); E-J (Class of '26 and beyond)

Mrs. Cusimano joined BHS in 2022 but she is not new to District 100. She worked as a counselor at Belvidere North for seven years before moving on to Jefferson High School in Rockford for seven more years and she is now happy to be back in Belvidere! Mrs. Cusimano earned both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Northern Illinois University. She greatly appreciates that warm welcome she has received from staff and students during her first year here at BHS. Mrs. Cusimano enjoys cooking, gardening, trying out new restaurants, and just spending time with her husband and her children. A fun fact about Mrs. Cusimano -- before she became a counselor, she co-hosted a radio show in Rockford!!!!

mRS. gOMORY  

Student Last Names Lo-Ri (Class of '24 and '25); K-Q (Class of '26 and beyond)

Mrs. Gomory began her counseling career at Belvidere High in 2015, shortly after graduating with her Masters Degree in school counseling. Mrs. Gomory earned both her Bachelors Degree in Psychology with a minor in Spanish and her Masters in Counseling from Northern Illinois University. She is a National Certified Counselor as well as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Illinois. Mrs. Gomory's favorite part of BHS is our strong school spirit and how we pull together when times are tough. In her spare time, Mrs. Gomory enjoys hanging out with her husband, her new baby daughter, and tending to her fish. 


mRS. OWEN

Student Last Names Rj-Z (Class of '24 and '25); R-Z (Class of '26 and beyond)

Mrs. Owen came to Belvidere High School in 2020. Prior to coming to Belvidere, she worked as a counselor at Genoa-Kingston High School for three years. Mrs. Owen is a proud alumnus of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, which is where she received her Bachelor's degree in Sociology. Immediately afterwards, she traded her orange and blue for red and black by attending Northern Illinois University, where she received her Master's Degree in Counseling. Mrs. Owen is both a National Certified Counselor and a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Illinois. Her favorite part about working at Belvidere High School is the kindness and support from all of the staff. Mrs. Owen is very much looking forward to working with her students and seeing their growth throughout the school year. A fun fact about Mrs. Owen is that she is a powerlifter.

mR. bLANCO

Students in English Learner Program

Mr. Blanco joined BHS as a counselor in 2020 after interning at Jefferson High School in Rockford. Mr. Blanco earned both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees at Northern Illinois University. In his short time at BHS, he has come to appreciate the support from our staff. In his spare time, Mr. Blanco enjoys drawing, reading, playing the drums, and surfing. He looks forward to working with BHS staff and students to help things run as smoothly as possible.


mISS NICHOLS

Credit Recovery/Student Success Counselor

Before beginning her career at BHS, she earned her Master's Degree in Counseling from Eastern Illinois University in May 2022. Miss Nichols also earned her Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from Eastern Illinois and decided she loved it so much that she would stay for her Master's Degree in Counseling. Miss Nichols loves the welcoming, fun, and fruitful environment that BHS brings. She enjoys that she can be herself while still sharing new ideas and learning how to be the best counselor she can be. When Miss Nichols is not at school, she enjoys spending time outside, reading, and caring for her houseplants. Miss Nichols' favorite color is baby blue and she plays a mean game of Jenga. Go Bucs!


SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST

MRS. HELGESON

Mrs. Helgeson became the school psychologist at Belvidere High School in 2013. Prior to that she worked in Woodstock District 200 for 14 years. Mrs. Helgeson earned both her Bachelors and Masters degrees from Northern Illinois University. What Mrs. Helgeson likes most about BHS is the camaraderie with a great staff who are always willing to go above and beyond for students. When she's not at BHS, Mrs. Helgeson enjoys being with her husband and two children and loves gardening, cooking, and anything to do with the outdoors and nature.


SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKERS

MRS. Perez

Mrs. Perez came to Belvidere High School in 2021 after working for four years as a social worker at Pioneer Center, Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health, and Northwestern Medicine. Mrs. Perez earned both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from George Williams College of Aurora University in Williams Bay, Wisconsin. Mrs. Perez enjoys being at BHS because the students are awesome, the staff is welcoming and supportive, and there is a great sense of community here. Mrs. Perez and her husband have a dog and a cat and, in her free time, she enjoys being with family, camping, and just swinging in a hammock!

MS. AHLBERG

Ms. Ahlberg joins BHS this year but she is not new to Belvidere as she is a proud BHS alum! Ms. Ahlberg earned her Bachelor's degree at Illinois State University and her Master's in Social Work at the University of Illinois-Chicago. She did post Master's work at Aurora University. Prior to coming to BHS, Ms. Ahlberg spent 25 years working in child welfare and five years working in Chicago Public Schools. As a BHS alum, she loves the energy from staff and students at BHS. In her free time, Ms. Ahlberg loves to travel and explore new places with her family and take trips to the lake.

INTERVENTIONIST


MRS. WALBAUM

Mrs. Walbuam joined Belvidere High School in 2016, although she did her internship at BHS eleven years earlier. Before becoming a Buc, Mrs. Walbaum worked in the Harlem school district for eleven years. Prior to working as a school Social Worker, Mrs. Walbaum worked in clinical and hospital settings for about 15 years. Mrs. Walbaum earned her Bachelor's Degree from Illinois State University, earned her Master's in Social Work at the University of Illinois-Chicago and has completed post-graduate work at Aurora University. She loves working with high school students and most especially appreciates the warm, welcoming, and supportive staff at BHS. In her spare time, Mrs. Walbaum enjoys camping, gardening, and traveling with her family. 


SECRETARY/REGISTRAR

MRS. BRAWNER

Mrs. Brawner has been with District 100 since 2006 and has worked at BHS since 2010. She has served as a hall monitor, discipline secretary, and now as Student Services secretary and registrar. Mrs. Brawner has two sons who both graduated from BHS. She and her family enjoy hockey (both of her sons played for Belvidere Fury) and also enjoy boating, quading, and kayaking. The thing Mrs. Brawner likes most about BHS is the feeling of being a team and working together to make this a great place for students to thrive and staff to work.
