2023 Scholarship Information

Graduating D100 Seniors will have the opportunity to apply for multiple scholarships thanks to many generous donors. Applications are being accepted between February 3rd and February 21st.

The application site has been sent via ParentSquare to all current D100 seniors and their parent/guardians. Students who are selected to receive a scholarship will be invited to our Scholarship Awards Night which will take place on Tuesday, May 23rd in the Performing Arts Center at BHS.

Advanced Technology Center Scholarship

The Advanced Technology Center scholarship is an award offered to students interested in pursuing careers in Welding, Mechatronics, or CNC Machining. A partnership with Rock Valley College and District 100 will allow students the opportunity to complete the Industrial Welder certificate, Fundamentals of Mechatronics certificate, or CNC Lathe or Mill Operator Level One credential. All three programs are offered at the Advanced Technology Center in Belvidere.

Students who are awarded this scholarship will have their tuition, materials, and course fees covered in partnership with Rock Valley College. This is a great opportunity for students who are interested in entering the workforce quickly after high school. (The number of scholarships available are: Welding - 30, Mechatronics - 30, CNC Machining - 10)

Requirements/Criteria:

Must be a Belvidere High School or Belvidere North High School Graduating Senior
Enroll in one of the described programs by the upcoming fall semester.

Wilbur Mong Scholarship

Wilbur Mong was a science teacher at Belvidere High school for 29 years. During that time, he taught physics, chemistry and also served as department chairman. Mr. Mong was also well known for his hobby, which was beekeeping.

Requirements/Criteria:

Must have completed four years of science with an overall GPA of 3.0 or better.
Must intend to pursue a career in science or science related field of study.
Highlight all science courses taken.

Frederick Simon Physics & Math Scholarship

Frederick V. Simon was the band director at Belvidere Junior High School from 1950 until his retirement in 1974. His passion was music, but he also had a strong interest in the fields of physics and advanced mathematics. Mr. Simon established a scholarship to assist graduating seniors who will pursue a degree in physics or a math-related field.

Requirements/Criteria:

Must be a graduating senior of Belvidere High School or Belvidere North High School who has completed four (4) years of science or math classes with an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Must be accepted by a university or college with a declared major involving physics or math.
Highlight all science and math classes and the grades achieved.
Include a statement of 100-200 words describing your involvement in physics and math, what it has meant to you, and how you will continue to involve physics and math in your life.

D. Elvin Brown Scholarship

D. Elvin Brown was a very progressive farmer in Caledonia Township. He was always interested and active in the community with many contributions. He served as president of the Boone County Farm Bureau and the Boone County Soil Conservation District. When District 100 was being formed, he became an influential spokesman in encouraging Caledonia Township to support the concept.

The D. Elvin Brown Scholarship was established by Milton R. Brown, to honor his contributions to this community.

This scholarship for $3,000 is presented annually to an outstanding Belvidere High School or Belvidere North High School graduating senior who is enrolled in an accredited four-year college or university in their College of Agricultural and Life Sciences or College of Agriculture, Consumer and Environmental Sciences curriculum.

Requirements/Criteria:

Belvidere High School or Belvidere North High School graduating senior.
Applicant is attending an accredited four-year college or university.
Majoring in Agriculture or Food Science. If no senior is majoring in these fields it will be awarded to a senior majoring in Information Technology.
Preference will be given to a child of a farmer.

Applicants will be required to share their reasons for pursuing an Agricultural Sciences college degree and why they'd like to be considered for this scholarship.

Preston Trush Magnuson Scholarship

Requirements/Criteria:

Applicant must have attended Kishwaukee Elementary School in Garden Prairie.

Olney and Jeane Witbeck Scholarship

Requirements/Criteria:

Preference will be given to young men or young women who have lived on a farm within Boone County, Illinois, and who have shown qualities of leadership.

Blanche L. Dawson Nursing

The Blanche L. Dawson Nursing Scholarship was established to provide money to worthy young women who reside in Boone County for education and training in the nursing profession.

After the first year award has been granted, you will be permitted to reapply each year thereafter for additional scholarship money. Information regarding this reapplication procedure will be presented to the recipient(s) of this scholarship during the Scholarship Night assembly or can be obtained from the Trust Department at Midland State Bank. The re-application form details the required information and supporting documentation as well as the application deadline.

Requirements/Criteria:

List the following:

a. Reason for the interest in a nursing career.

b. Why you need this scholarship.

c. Cost of tuition and room and board.

Boone County Realtors Scholarship

Requirements/Criteria:

Applicant must have a 3.0 grade point average or higher and demonstrate a “need,” with consideration given to activities, participation, and career goals.

At the time of application for this scholarship applicant must have applied for post-secondary study at an accredited trade school, college, or university.
Applicant must attach a letter of recommendation.

Boone County Crime Stoppers

Requirements/Criteria:

Must be a graduating senior and pursuing a career in a crime-related field of study.

Cosmopolitan Club of Belvidere

The Cosmopolitan Club of Belvidere is a group of well-respected, business professionals in Boone County who join together to better the community through social service. Club membership consists of business leaders in diverse sectors of the community. The club comes together, as part of Cosmopolitan International, to fund many worthwhile programs with three major initiatives in mind: children, elderly and diabetes education. Through the roasted corn sales at the Boone County Fair and proceeds from our annual golf outing, the Cosmo Club of Belvidere donates more than $25,000 annually to the community.

Requirements/Criteria:

Relatives of Cosmopolitan Club of Belvidere members are ineligible for the scholarship

Applicants will be required to give responses to each question:

Please explain why you think you should be awarded the Cosmo Scholarship (one paragraph maximum).
Please describe any volunteer activities, extracurricular or community involvement. List duties performed and years involved.
Please write which income tier your family would be categorized in (please use gross income).

Tier 1: $0-$25,000

Tier 2: $25,001-$50,000

Tier 3: $50,001-$75,000

Tier 4: $75,001-$100,000

Tier 5: $100,001-$125,000

Tier 6: $125,001 and above

You may write up to a paragraph to describe any financial need justification.

Please list any additional financial assistance you know you will be receiving (i.e. scholarships

from other organizations or the school at you are planning on attending, financial aid, etc.).

All applicants will be considered regardless of their financial needs.

Nicholas Breckenridge Memorial

The Nicholas Breckenridge Memorial Scholarship is available for a Belvidere High School senior who participated in band throughout high school and will attend a 2-year or 4-year college. Nick graduated with honors from Belvidere High School in 2003 and participated in band, golf, and tennis throughout his high school years. This scholarship will be limited to students who participated in band throughout high school. Academic and extracurricular activities will be considered.

Requirements/Criteria:

1. Must be a Belvidere High School graduating senior.

2. Must be accepted by a 2 or 4 year accredited college.

3. Must have participated in a band program at Belvidere High School.

4. Preference given to participation in extracurricular activities and the student’s academic achievements.

Applicants will be required to:

● List ensembles and instruments played throughout your high school career.

● State your goals and what field you intend to pursue in college (1/2 to 1 page)

Hugh K. & Alice Iles Funderburg

The Funderburg legacy of community investment, support, financial benevolence, and goodwill is threaded throughout Boone County history. The generosity of Hugh K. and Alice Iles Funderburg will live on as the descendants of R. Robert and Sally D. Funderburg have set up this scholarship in their memory. By endowing this scholarship program, the donors intend to continue to help the Boone County Community and its residents succeed and to promote entrepreneurship at Belvidere and Belvidere North High Schools. Two eligible applicants will be awarded the amount of $10,000 each.

Requirements/Criteria:

Must be a senior in a District 100 school.
Scholarship applicants must have an GPA score in the top 25% of their high school class.
Scholarship applicants must have accepted entrance as a full-time student at an accredited four-year undergraduate college, where he or she is enrolled in the college’s business school or intends to major in business or a related field of study.
Scholarship applicants must demonstrate active involvement in the Boone County community and/or substantial participation in school extracurricular activities and/or sports.
Preference given to applicants who demonstrate entrepreneurial spirit through academic, community or other endeavors.
Scholarship applicants have the option of providing a statement of financial need, but financial need will not be determinative in the selection process.

Please submit a minimum of one recommendation and/or reference from a professional, and a maximum 200-word essay explaining your interest in the business field for your course of study.

All finalists must be willing to do an interview with the Boone County Community Foundation.

Travis Lee Hudson

Travis Lee Hudson was a Belvidere High School graduate who excelled in baseball as well as basketball and golf. Travis thoroughly enjoyed life, family and friends. He was amazing in sports, well known, and liked by all that knew him. In October of 2005 Travis was tragically killed at the age of 25.

In memory of Travis, the family would like to present scholarships to two deserving students who meet the following criteria.

Requirements/Criteria:

Must be a graduating senior who has participated in baseball, basketball or golf.

Obtained at least a 2.0 GPA.

Must be accepted by a 2 or 4 year accredited college or university.

Must be considered a good citizen in and out of school.

Applicants will be required to include a short statement about yourself, your family, and your future plans in 500 words or less.

Boone County Gardeners of America

Requirements/Criteria:

Must be a District 100 graduating senior.
The applicant must enroll for post-secondary study at an accredited trade school, junior college, or university and pursue a course of study in: Horticulture, Landscaping, Forestry, Floral Culture, Soil or Land Conservation, Environmental Science, or Botany.
Financial need and GPA will be considered. However, they are not the sole determining factors in the awarding of the scholarship.

Applicants will be required to share tuition cost per year, what your career goals and how will this scholarship aid you in achieving these goals.

Two references are also required.

Panhellenic Society - Elisabeth Seegmiller

The Panhellenic Society of Belvidere is composed of university women who, during their college lives, were members of various national sororities. These area women are dedicated to the attainment of higher education and annually offer this local scholarship.

Requirements/Criteria:

Female
Accepted by a 4-year college or university
Must have 3.0 GPA or higher.

Applicants will be requred to answer one of the two questions in essay form:

Who or what in your life has been your biggest influence and why?
Discuss a special attribute or accomplishment that sets you apart.

Belvidere Rotary Club Walter “Bud” Schiltz

Requirements/Criteria:

Consideration will be given to: Following the Rotary Creed of service above self, demonstrating leadership, participation in school and community activities, and good citizenship.
Financial need is not a prerequisite but a consideration. A primary intention of this scholarship is to reward top scholars for their accomplishments.
The Belvidere Rotary Club Scholarship Committee may require personal interviews with students prior to final selection in awarding said scholarship.

Mike Hearn Memorial Football

The Mike Hearn Memorial Football Scholarship is available to a high school senior that graduated from BHS and played at least 1 year of varsity football. Coach Hearn was a Driver's Ed teacher and football coach at BHS for 36 years. He was a firm believer that football was more than wins and losses - it was about the life long lessons learned on and off the field. Coach Hearn was inducted into the IHSA Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 2013.

Requirements/Criteria:

Graduating senior from Belvidere High School
Must have played at least 1 year of varsity football at BHS
Accepted by a 2 or 4 year college
Must exemplify strong leadership and character in and out of school
Be involved in Community Service

Applicants will be required to submit an essay outlining your community service involvement.

Two letters of recommendation are also required with at least one letter must be from a current teacher or coach.

Zonta Club - Vanessa M. Werth Memorial\

Requirements/Criteria:

Female
Must be accepted by an accredited college or university
Top 25% of class
One letter of recommendation

Applicants will be required to include an essay that addresses what you intend to accomplish in the next five years, and how you intend to incorporate community service activities/projects into these plans.

May O. Kelly Memorial

Requirement/Criteria:

The recipient will be a District 100 graduate who has demonstrated outstanding scholarship and financial need and who is attending or will be attending the University of Wisconsin - Madison, Rockford University, Purdue University, or Northern Illinois University.

Northern Illinois Vintage Tractor and Engine Association

Requirements/Criteria:

Must be pursuing a career in any agriculture-related field. This can include diesel mechanics for agriculture equipment.

Applicant will be required to explain why you have chosen the agriculture field.

Janet Hack Memorial

The Janet Hack Memorial Scholarship fund was established to provide financial assistance to a graduating senior who intends to pursue a career in a math, music, education, or counseling-related field of study.

Janet Hack was a former math teacher at Belvidere High school. Prior to teaching at BHS, Janet was a counselor at a community college. Janet loved music and was a talented organist. Janet had a great regard for the social and emotional needs of her students and taught with a fun loving and clever sense of humor.

Requirements/Criteria:

Must be a graduating senior.
Must intend to major in math, music, education or counseling related field while in college.
Must be accepted by a 2 or 4 year accredited college, or university.

Belvidere USBC Youth Bowling

Requirements/Criteria:

Must be a graduating senior from Belvidere High School or Belvidere North High School.
Applicant must have participated in the Belvidere Youth Bowling Program.
Applicant must be going to a school or college for further education in the following school year.
Applicant must not have participated in any adult sports.

Applicant will be required to include a short essay stating how this scholarship will assist you in your educational goals.

John P. O’Leary Memorial/Bucciferro Family McDonald’s Scholarship

This scholarship is for a McDonald's Restaurant employee of at least one semester who has been a good school citizen.

Requirements/Criteria:

1. Must be currently employed at the Belvidere State Street or Chrysler Drive McDonald's and have worked there for at least one semester.

2. While working there, must have demonstrated a high quality of work.

3. Must maintain good grades.

4. Must be active in school activities.

Alden and Dorothy Perkins

Two scholarships will be offered annually – one to students seeking a degree in education and the other to students seeking a pharmaceutical degree.

Requirements/Criteria:

1. Applicant must be a District 100 graduating senior.

2. Must be planning to pursue an education or pharmaceutical degree.

3. Must have 3.0 GPA or higher.

4. Children of Midland State Bank employees are not eligible to apply.

Wilbur & William Cummings Memorial Educational

Wilbur and William Cummings were twin brothers and lifelong residents of Caledonia, IL. They were active members in the Caledonia Congregational Church, the North Boone Fire Department, the Belvidere Moose Lodge, and both worked at the Belford Theater for 27 years. After Wilbur lost his arm in a farming accident in 1953, he was treated by a doctor in nearby Caledonia. Both brothers attributed having a physician close by to saving Wilbur’s life. The incident had an incredible impact on Wilbur and William. They valued and saw the importance of education and wanted to provide scholarship opportunities for young men and women interested in furthering their education. As a reflection of their lifelong interest in and support of District 100, Wilbur and William Cummings established a scholarship to assist Belvidere and Belvidere North High School graduates who intend to enter the field of public education.

Requirements/Criteria:

1. Must be a current resident of Boone County, Illinois.

2. Must be a graduate of a District 100 public high school.

3. Must have been accepted by a 4-year university or college with a declared major in education.

4. Must be able to demonstrate charitable or civic activities and community service in Boone County.

5. Financial need is not a prerequisite but a consideration.

Applicants will be required to describe the qualities of a teacher and why you want to obtain a teaching degree, in 200 words or less.

Belvidere Youth Baseball

Belvidere Youth Baseball is a non-profit organization providing baseball and softball programs for Boone County Youth since 1958. BYB wishes to encourage students who plan to continue playing baseball or softball at the college level. Up to two scholarships will be awarded each year.

Requirements/Critieria:

1. Applicant must have played baseball or softball at BYB.

2. Applicant must have a G.P.A. of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale.

3. Applicant must have played baseball or softball in high school.

4. Applicant must be accepted by a 2 or 4 year accredited college or university.

5. Applicant must be planning to play baseball or softball in college.

Applicants will be required to share the number of years you have played baseball or softball at BYB and in high school. Please include any parent involvement with BYB while you were a player (ie: coach, volunteer, board member, etc.)

Branden Ramey Memorial

Branden Ramey was a 2001 graduate of Belvidere High School who went on to serve his country in the United States Marine Corps. Branden's dream was to return to Belvidere High School and become a history teacher. Branden wanted to change lives here in his hometown. Unfortunately, on November 8th 2004, at 22 years old, Branden gave the ultimate sacrifice of his life for our country. It is our hope to continue changing lives in our community in honor of Branden so his memory and sacrifice are never forgotten.

Requirements/Criteria:

1. Must be a Belvidere High School graduating senior.

2. Must be accepted by a 2 or 4 year accredited college or university.

3. Must be pursuing a career in education.

Applicants will be required to share why you're pursuing a career (at least 100 words but no more than 150) in education and how will this scholarship assist you with your goals and future plans. (150 words or less).

Branden Ramey Sports

Requirements/Criteria:

1. Must be a Belvidere High School graduating senior.

2. Must be accepted by a 2 or 4 year accredited college or university.

3. Must have participated in any sport during your high school career.

Applicants will be required to share how your participation in sports prepared you for your future profession (at least 100 words, but no more than 150), and how will this scholarship assist you with your goals and future plans (at least 100 words, but no more than 150)?

Branden Ramey Legacy

Requirements/Criteria:

1. Must be a Belvidere High School or a Belvidere North High School graduating senior.

2. Must be accepted by a 2 or 4 year accredited college or university.

Applicants will be required to describe the impact Branden Ramey had on the Belvidere community as a person and as a member of the United States Marine Corps.

BHS Student Council Community Service

Requirements/Criteria:

1. Must be a Belvidere High School graduating senior.

2. Must be accepted by a 2 or 4 year accredited college, or university.

3. Applicant has demonstrated good citizenship and has contributed to the welfare of the school, his or her classmates, and society.

4. Applicant must have completed community service hours outside of those provided by BHS or BHS extracurricular activities.

Applicants will be required to list all clubs or community service activities (inside or outside of school) that you have participated in during your high school career and make a short statement that should include the following:

1. Your goals and future plans after high school.

2. Why you should be considered for this scholarship.

3. Choose a favorite community service project you participated in and describe why it was especially meaningful to you.

One letter of recommendation is required and must come from the organization where you spent most of your community service hours.

North Boone Fire District #3 Firemen’s Association “Jake Schoepski”’

Jake Schoepski was a dedicated firefighter for the North Boone Fire Protection District #3 for 48 years and also served as a trustee for 25 years. In his memory, the NBFPD#3 Firemen’s Association is awarding a scholarship to a graduating senior who is interested in pursuing a career in firefighting, EMS, medical, police or other first responder field.

Requirements/Criteria:

1. Must be a Belvidere North High School graduating senior.

2. Must live in Boone County.

3. Must be interested in pursuing a career in firefighting, EMS, medical, police or other first responder field.

4. Must be willing to attend a personal interview if requested.

Applicants will also be required to submit an essay in 300 words or less stating in your own words how a First Responder has impacted your life and how this award will aid you in achieving your goals.

Jim Turner FFA Memorial

Jim Turner was a member of F.F.A. for four years and held a state office. Preference may be given to students pursuing a career in an agriculture-related field.

Requirements/Criteria:

1. Must be a graduating senior from Belvidere High School or Belvidere North High School.

2. Must have been a member in F.F.A. for at least two years.

3. Must be involved in community service.

Applicants will also be required to answer the following two questions:

● How has your experience in F.F.A. helped you prepare for your future?

● What are your plans for the future?

Marilyn Turner Memorial

Marilyn Turner was a registered nurse, having graduated from Evanston Hospital at Northwestern. She volunteered at the Boone County Health Department for 25 years and this scholarship is for students seeking a degree in nursing.

Requirements/Criteria:

1. Must be a graduating senior from Belvidere High School or Belvidere North High School.

2. Must have been accepted into an accredited 4-year nursing program.

3.Must be involved in community service.

Applicants will be required to share why have you chosen to seek a degree in nursing.

Harold H. & Marjorie L. Pratt Memorial

The late Harold H. and Marjorie L. Pratt established this scholarship to assist worthy young men and women in attending the college of their choice.

Requirements/Criteria:

1. Must be accepted by a 2 or 4 year accredited college/university, or technical school.

2. Student shall have demonstrated academic achievements necessary to predict success in college.

3. Preference may be given to a student demonstrating financial need- as shown on the SAR report that you receive after completing the FAFSA.

You will be required to write a statement about your academic achievements and explain how these achievements will assure the success of your future education and career goals.

Boone County Fire Protection District #2 Firemen’s Association Memorial

This scholarship was established in honor of all past and present Boone County Fire Protection District #2 members who have made this endowment a possibility.

Requirements/Criteria:

1. This scholarship is for students intending to major in a fire, EMS, or medical field.

2. Applicant must be a resident of Boone County for the past three (3) years.

3. Applicant must be a graduating senior.

4. Applicant must have a 2.5 GPA or higher.

5. Applicant must attend a personal interview if requested.

6. Scholarship is open to students who have a parent that is currently a firefighter or is a retired firefighter.

7. Scholarship must be redeemed within one calendar year from award date.

8. Must work one shift at the Boone County Fair Firefighters Doughnut Stand the same year the scholarship is redeemed.

Applicants will be required to write an essay of no more than 500 words describing yourself and stating why you should receive this award. Be sure to include your career goals and ambitions.

BNHS Student Council Service

Requirements/Criteria:

1. Applicant must be a Belvidere North High School graduating senior.

2. Accepted by a college, university or trade school program.

3. Must have demonstrated involvement and leadership in school and community

service activities.

4. Preference may be given to Student Council members, but Student Council membership is NOT required.

Applicants will be required to share a short statement about what was the most significant school or community service project you participated in during high school. Include your leadership role and why it was significant.

Boone County Retired Teachers Association

Boone Retired Teachers Association (BRTA), formed in 1994, is a chapter of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association. The members of BRTA are offering this local scholarship to encourage students entering into the education profession.

Requirements/Criteria:

1. Applicant must be a Boone County graduating senior.

2. Pursue a career in education.

3. Financial need may be considered.

4. Must be accepted by an accredited college or university.

5. Include a statement of 100 words or less why you have chosen education as a career and explain how you plan to achieve your goals.

BHS Performing Arts Boosters & Performing Arts Students

This scholarship to graduating seniors of involved in performing arts (i.e. - band, choir, theater) to help advance their development as both student and lifelong performers.

Requirements/Criteria:

1. Must be a graduating senior from Belvidere High School.

2. Must intend to participate in music or performing arts at college.

3. Must have a minimum of three years participation in a high school music or performing arts program.

4. Must have a minimum grade point average of 2.5.

5. Must obtain one letter of recommendation from a teacher outside of the music/theater department.

Applicants will be required to write an essay stating what performing means to you, and what do you intend to do with your education.

Frederick and Agnes Simon Music

Frederick V. Simon was the band director at Belvidere Junior High School from 1950 until he retired in 1974. As a reflection of their interest in and support of the music programs in Belvidere School District 100, Frederick and Agnes Simon established a scholarship to assist students who plan to attend a college or university.

Requirements/Criteria:

1. Must be a current resident of Boone County, Illinois.

2. Must be a student in a District #100 high school.

3. Must be accepted by a 2-year or 4-year university or college.

4. Must be a talented instrumentalist, vocalist, or pianist.

5. Financial need may be considered.

Applicant will be required to complete a statement describing your involvement in music, what it has meant to you, and how you will continue to involve music in your life. This should be at least 100 words, but not to exceed 200 words.

Belvidere Tornado Cross Country

Coach Rick Menge has been the Belvidere Tornado Running Club coach since 2009, and Anita Koziol since 2021. Coach Rick and Coach Anita coach athletes in the Belvidere area ranging in age from 6-18. The Tornados XC program services approximately 80 of the Belvidere area youth each year. This scholarship will be awarded to one deserving young student athlete from both Belvidere High School and Belvidere North High School. The choice will be made by a scholarship committee based upon coaches’ input and student essay.

Requirements/Criteria:

Must be a graduating senior of BHS or BNHS who has competed as part of the Belvidere Tornados Youth Cross Country Team between the ages of 6 and 18. Applicant must have competed in at least one race as a Belvidere Tornado XC Team Athlete. Applicant does not have to currently be a Cross Country runner (for either the school team or the Tornados).
Evidence of good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 2.5.
Student must be planning to attend college or trade school after graduation to receive scholarship.
Preference will be given to a runner who will continue to participate in Cross Country at the collegiate level.

Applicant will be required to include short essay explaining how running and being a part of a team has impacted your life as well as a letter of reference from a coach or teacher that should address the following:

Is there a word that best describes this student athlete Please explain.
Describe the student athlete’s leadership qualities and dedication to your team and/or classroom. Please provide any specific stories to describe this person.
Why do you feel this student is deserving of being the recipient of this scholarship?

BNHS Music Boosters Senior

The Belvidere North High School Music Boosters proudly offers scholarship opportunities for graduating seniors of the BNHS Music Department to help advance their development as both student and lifelong musicians.

Requirements/Criteria:

1. Must be a graduating senior from Belvidere North High School.

Robert L. Tripke Industrial Arts

Robert L. Tripke was an excellent carpenter and woodworker. The Robert L. Tripke Industrial Arts Scholarship was established to provide financial assistance to a graduating senior who best exemplifies the following: character, academic achievement, financial need and a desire to succeed in the vocation of Industrial Arts.

Requirements/Criteria:

1. Must be a graduating senior from Belvidere High School or Belvidere North High School.

2. Must have a GPA of at least 3.0.

3. Must be accepted into a college or trade program focusing on the Industrial Arts.

4. Must exemplify excellent character.

5. Graduate must demonstrate the financial need for the scholarship.

Richard Koceja Random Acts of Kindness

The Richard Koceja Random Acts of Kindness Memorial Scholarship honors a man who loved education and helping high school and college students. Since he didn't have a high school diploma, he pushed for younger generations not to follow in his footsteps. This scholarship was created so every student would be eligible, the only requirement being that they continue their education after high school, and that they are focused on helping others. One random act of kindness is all it takes to be recognized and to receive a random act of kindness in return.

Requirements/Criteria:

1. Must be a Belvidere High School or Belvidere North High School Graduating senior

2. You will be required to share why you believe you deserve a scholarship and what you have done for others as a random act of kindness.

3. Must submit at least 1 letter of recommendation from either a school administrator, staff member, faculty member, coach, or (if the applicant has a job) a supervisor.

a. Letter must explain why the applicant deserves the scholarship and any "random acts of kindness" they have witnessed from the applicant (applicants with more letters may have a better chance of winning). The letter should explain their relationship to the student. (No family members, please).

Bob & Marie Stehley Memorial

Bob was born in Belvidere in 1923 and was raised and lived most of his life in Belvidere. He graduated from Belvidere High School in 1942. He served in WW II in what was then called the Army Air Force branch of the United States Military. At the end of the war, he returned to Belvidere and got married. He and his wife, Marie raised their four children in the same home in Belvidere. All four children graduated from Belvidere High School. Both Bob and Marie were active in the lives of his children, always finding time to support them in their many school related activities. Bob was the first President of the Belvidere Buc Booster Club and remained active for many years even after his children graduated from Belvidere High School.

Bob and Marie were members of the VFW until the time of Bob's passing and could always be found having lunch or dinner on Veteran’s Day. Bob was proud and honored to be a veteran, and to have served his country during WW II.

Bob passed away peacefully on August 3, 2018, and Marie on June 17, 2020 while residing in Mt. Vernon, Illinois near their son, Tom.

Requirements/Criteria:

1. The individual should have a financial need for the money.

2. The individual should be a graduating senior from Belvidere High School.

3. The individual should ideally have a family member that is serving or has served in a branch of the US military.

4. Student in good standing.

5. Plans to attend a two-year or four-year college or university, or trade school.

Dave Graham Memorial

Dave Graham was a history teacher, librarian and golf coach in District 100. As a lifelong learner and proponent of the value of education, Dave’s legacy is to help future educators fulfill their dreams. Two recipients will be chosen from Boone County.

Requirements/Criteria:

Must be a graduating senior at BHS or BNHS
Rank in upper half of class or top half of SAT or ACT scores for class.
Must pursue a career in education.
Accepted to an accredited college or university.
Applicant will be required to share a statement of 100 words or less on why you have chosen education as a career and explain how you plan to achieve your goals.

Coach Gary Lewis

The coaching career of Coach Lewis is marked with many great Coaches and players he had the pleasure of working with and building lifelong relationships. Coach Lewis spent 40 years coaching, it was his passion and love.

At 18 Coach Lewis started his coaching career with Kenrock Community Center Youth Program. Over the course of many years Coach Lewis coached at many local schools including Jefferson, East, Guilford, Belvidere North, Christian Life and Berean Baptist. He also spent a few years with Beloit college, with his last few years spent coaching semi-pro football in Wisconsin. Over the years he has taken his teams from ground up programs to playoffs and one State title. Coaching was not just an on-field practice for Coach Lewis, his belief was that all things taught on the field should flow over to everyday life and he spent many hours mentoring players to be the best they could. God, family and football were all taught on and off the field.

Coach Lewis supported his family with a full-time job, while coaching and working on his bachelor’s degree at the same time. Two things remained on his football bucket list, his dream job of coaching college football and to get five minutes to pick the brain of Coach Bill Belichick of the Patriots.

Must have played high school football for two or more years

Committing to a community college or 4-year university in the upcoming fall (playing college football is NOT a requirement)

Philip Poffenberger Memorial Agricultural

Phil was a loving father and grandfather who grew up on a farm and had a career in selling International Harvester farm and truck equipment throughout his whole life. He loved watching his grandkids participate in all sorts of Belvidere High School activities and was always on the bleachers cheering the teams on. Margery L. Hinrichs Scholarship

Marjorie was a long-time librarian at Belvidere High School and wished to recognize students who are both active in sports and good academic students at Belvidere High School with this scholarship fund created at the time of her death. This scholarship is given to senior athletes at Belvidere High School who demonstrate athletic skills, academic skills, good character, and are pursuing a post high school education at an accredited college or university upon graduation. Coaches at Belvidere High School make the nominations for this scholarship.

Requirements/Criteria:

1. Must be a senior male or female athlete from Belvidere High School with a coach’s nomination.

2. Must have applied for post-secondary study at an accredited college or university.

Rob Salley Scholarship

Rob graduated from BHS in 1990. He went on to college to become a teacher like his parents Brad and Judy Salley. He taught in the Belvidere school district for 25 years. Rob loved his family and had many wonderful friends. Rob enjoyed many sports and especially enjoyed coaching.

Rob had a tremendous impact on the community, his students and athletes. In honor of Rob, and the Belvidere Bucs two scholarships will be presented each year to a Belvidere High School male and female athlete.

Requirements/Criteria:

Must be a Belvidere High School graduating senior.
Participated in at least one sport senior year.
Must have a GPA of 3.0 or above.
Applicant must have a positive impact on their community and those around them.
Applicant must continue their education in either a 2 or 4 year college/university or trade school.
Applicant will be required to write about how their personal experiences have had a positive impact on the community and those around them.

Solutions Bank Scholarship

Solutions Bank will be awarding scholarship funds to several local high school graduates who will begin work toward an associates degree, certificate or bachelor's degree in the fall semester following their graduation.

Recipients will be chosen based on their academic record, extracurricular and community involvement, leadership records, well-defined educational goals and personal references.

Requirements/Criteria:

Applicant must provide two letters of recommendation from someone who can speak about their academics, character or extracurricular/community activities.

Jerry Parsons' Coon Creek Casters

Gerald Parsons was a charter member of the Coon Creek Casters, which was formed in 1983. After his passing, the organization renamed the scholarship in his memory. The Coon Creek Casters is a non-profit organization that promotes the sport of fishing and the field of conservation. Throughout the years, the Coon Creek Casters have educated the youth and community by promoting, sponsoring and donating to organizations in need.

The Coon Creek Caster scholarship is in the amount of $1,000, and will go to one qualifying senior from Belvidere High School and one qualifying senior from Belvidere North High School. We realize how important this scholarship is to you and your family and take great care in reviewing all applications. We wish you luck and success in your future!

Requirements/Criteria:

Be a graduating senior with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
Must be pursuing a college program at a U.S. accredited college or university in the field of Forestry & Conservation, Teaching, Nursing, or Health Sciences.
One letter of recommendation.

Boone County Arts Council Visual Art

The Boone County Arts Council has established a scholarship from the proceeds of “Paint on State.” This is a yearly community event that celebrates the Visual Arts. This scholarship award is to assist in the payment of university or college fees.

Requirements/Criteria:

Must be a District 100 graduating senior.
Submit five (5) high resolution photographs of artwork.
3.0 GPA or higher.
Preference given to a student who will be enrolled in a Visual Arts program.

District 100 Charitable Foundation

This scholarship is created to benefit a student pursuing a certificate, license, or two-year degree from an accredited school. Examples may include, but are not limited to: automotive technology, aviation maintenance technology, cosmetology, dental hygiene, early childhood education, fire science, manufacturing technology, massage therapy, nursing aide, personal training, welding, and more.

Requirements/Criteria:

1. Applicant must be a full-time student and graduating senior at Belvidere North or Belvidere High School.

2. Applicant must be planning to enroll in a program that will lead to a certificate, license, or two-year degree.

Applicant will be required to include an essay of no more than 500 words that addresses the following points:

● How your education at BHS or BNHS contributed to who you are today

● A special attribute or accomplishment that sets you apart

● Why you are a good candidate to receive this award, including the impact this scholarship would have on your future

Boone County Republican Scholarship

The Boone County Republican scholarship will be awarded to two students, typically one from each high school.

Requirements/Criteria:

Be a graduating senior of Belvidere High School or Belvidere North High School.
Be in good academic standing (as judged by the Scholarship Committee).
Be a supporter of the Republican Party.

Applicants will be required to write a short (200-300 word) statement on your interest in the Republican Party, values of the Republican Party and how you can support the Republican Party.

Belvidere Bucs Booster Club

Requirements/Criteria:

1. Applicant must be a Belvidere High School Graduating senior.

2. Family must be a dues-paying and active member of the Belvidere Bucs Booster Club.

3. Applicant must attend a 2-year or a 4-year accredited college, university, or technical school within the 12-month period subsequent to the current school year.

4. Applicant must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Applicants will be required to include an essay explaining (1) the value of Belvidere High School sports to you, (2) your goals and future plans, (3) and explain how you and your family are active members of the Belvidere Bucs Booster Club. Please use 750 words or less.

Two letters of recommendation are also required. One letter must be from one of his or her BHS coach/club advisor and one must be from his or her BHS teacher.

Dennis Sturges Memorial

Dennis was a dedicated Sergeant with the Boone County Sheriffs department for 30 years after graduating from Belvidere High School. His family has established this scholarship in his memory for a deserving Senior interested in serving their community in the area of criminal justice.

Requirements/Criteria:

Must be a graduating senior of Belvidere High School.
Must be pursuing a career in Criminal Justice
Must be in the upper 50% of class with a 2.5 GPA or higher.
Must be accepted into an accredited college or university.

Applicants will be required to write about:

● Why are you choosing the Criminal Justice field?

● What qualities do you possess that would make you a good fit for this field?

● Give examples of ways you have served the community.

● Express your need for financial assistance.

Belvidere Education Association Scholarship

Requirements/Criteria:

Pursue a career in teaching or other field in education.
GPA and financial need may be considered.
Write a one page summary describing the grade level and subject you would like to teach and why you chose to pursue the field of education.

Belvidere Officers Association Larry Wirth Jr.

Requirements/Criteria:

This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior who is interested in a career involving public safety.
Has a financial need.
GPA between 2.8 and 3.25.

Applicant is required to include a brief statement regarding why you should be awarded this scholarship and must be willing to attend a personal interview if requested.

Pheasants Forever

Pheasants Forever is a national conservation organization that focuses on protecting and improving habitat mainly for Pheasants, which in turn also helps many other species. PF has over 700 local chapters who each raise money locally to help conservation efforts at the national, state, and most importantly at the local level.

Requirements/Criteria:

A 2 or 4 year college or university, tech school, any type of trade school, or apprenticeship program
Be involved in outdoor activities and be a responsible participant in the environment.

Applicants will be required to write at statement of at least 350 words highlighting the following:

Describe in detail your favorite outdoor memory that revolves around an activity such as fishing, hunting, camping, Boy or Girl Scouts, 4-H, FFA, or conservation/habitat restoration work.
Explain the significance of this memory and why you consider it so important.
Tell us what role you envision the outdoors playing in your future. Also, what will you do in your lifetime to help ensure, respect, and protect nature so that future generations of young people will get to enjoy great outdoor memories like you have had?

Blue Thunder Booster

The Blue Thunder Booster Scholarship was established to support and encourage participation in sports activities at Belvidere North High School by raising funds that are distributed back into the various sports programs.

Requirements/Criteria:

Must be a senior athlete from Belvidere North High School who lettered in at least one (1) sport during his or her high school career.

Must have applied for post-secondary study at an accredited trade school, college, or university.
Must have a parent who is a current member of the Blue Thunder Boosters and actively participating in fundraising activities/committees.

Applicants will be required to describe how you and/or your parent(s) have participated in the fundraising activities/committees for Blue Thunder Boosters, how athletics and volunteering have enhanced your high school career, and give examples of community service through individual efforts or participation in school, church, or other initiatives. Please limit your response to 300 words or less.

Two letters of recommendation are also required: One from a teacher at Belvidere North High School and one from a Belvidere North High School coach who coached the applicant.

Belvidere Woman’s Club

Requirements/Criteria:

1. Must be accepted by an accredited college or university.

2. Shall have been active in extra-curricular, civic or cultural activities. Being active and volunteering are two principles that the Belvidere Woman's Club believe in strongly.

3. Must be in the upper half of the class.

Applicants will be required to describe in what manner this award will aid you in achieving your educational goals. (100 words)

Michael J. Bergman

Michael Bergman was a Belvidere High School graduate who played football and baseball for the Bucs. He thoroughly enjoyed all sports as well as hunting and fishing. Michael had strong family ties and a multitude of very close friends. Michael drowned during a fishing trip in Canada in 1993.

Requirements/Criteria:

The student must be an athlete from District 100 who participated in at least one sport in their senior year.
Each year one of the recipients must be a football player.
The student must have a GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
The student must be considered a good citizen in and out of school.
Special consideration will be given to those students who enjoy the friendship of their fellow students and are a positive influence on those friends.
Student must attend college in order to receive the scholarship.

Applicant will be required to list all sports and years of participation.

Poplar Grove Lions Club

Founded in 1961, the Poplar Grove Lions Club is one of the oldest chapters in Illinois. The PG Lions created, built, and maintain Lions Park in Poplar Grove, a nearly 14-acre park open to the public. The PG Lions partner with local organizations, local government, and neighbors to enhance the quality of life in Boone County. They continue that mission by providing scholarships to North Boone and Belvidere North graduating seniors.

Requirements/Criteria:

Must be a Belvidere North High School graduating senior.
Seeking post-graduate education (including, but not limited to college, junior college, trade
or vocational schools.
ACT scores will be considered.
Participation in extracurricular activities, volunteer projects, and community service is extremely important and will be considered accordingly.
While important, a connection to the Poplar Grove Lions Club or any other Lions Club is not necessary to apply for this scholarship.

Applicant will be required to:

Explain how your participation in community service, volunteer work, or service projects impacted your life and shaped your future goals and plans.
Describe any association with, connection to, and/or participation in any Lions Club events.

Belvidere Lions Club

Requirements/Criteria:

Applicant has been accepted by an accredited college or university.
Applicant has demonstrated good citizenship and has contributed to the welfare of the school, his or her classmates, and society.
Applicant ranks in the upper one-third of his or her graduating class and demonstrates a need for financial assistance.
Applicant has not received any other scholarship at the time this form is submitted.

Thomas F. Schoepski Scholarship

Thomas F Schoepski was raised in Boone County most of his 83 years. When he returned from China in World War II he began working for Maynard H Thorpe, learning the bricklaying and plastering trade. At that time there was a building boom for housing construction and while at work Tom also learned other skills in the construction of a house, electrical wiring, plumbing, and heating trades. When he went into business for himself he hired young men in the summer to assist him, in the process helping them to learn something about building and the skills needed.

Tom's grand aunt Glenn Olds Pettey was the Organizing Secretary for the Asa Cottrell Chapter, NSDAR, organized March 25, 1921. For this reason the Asa Cottrell Chapter would like to fund and create a technical/ skills scholarship for a graduating senior going into one of the trades in Thomas F Schoepski's name. It will be awarded each year to help a qualifying graduating senior from Belvidere and Belvidere North High Schools achieve their skills.

Requirements/Criteria:

Must provide proof of enrollment in a program prior to receiving funds.
Recipient chosen by school faculty and approved by Asa Cottrell Scholarship Chairman

Colton J Gritzmacher Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship fund is in the loving memory of Colton J Gritzmacher. Colton was a 2016 graduate of Belvidere North High School. Colton had several passions in his life: his family, helping others, the outdoors, and fire science.

Colton’s goal was to become a career firefighter in our local community. During his junior and senior years of high school, Colton enrolled and attended dual credit classes related to Fire Science offered through our local junior college. Upon graduation, Colton joined the Boone County Fire Protection District #2 and served as an active member until his sudden death on August 28, 2020, at the age of 23.

He will be remembered by those that knew him as a caring, friendly, helpful, and hardworking young man that always had a smile on his face.

Requirements/Criteria:

Must be a graduating senior attending any college/university or fire science institute with an emphasis in Fire Science.
Involvement in extracurricular and/or community activities
High standards of personal conduct, character, and integrity.
Pursuing a full or part time career in Fire Science.

Applicant will also be required to obtain two letters of recommendation from nonrelatives who are members of your community and who can attest to your character, school and/or community involvement and potential for future success.

Isabel Mullen Arts Scholarship

One $500 scholarship will be given to a Belvidere High School senior or a Belvidere North High School senior. This arts scholarship is administered by the Belvidere Woman's Club.

Requirements/Criteria

Plan to major in one field of the arts; graphic art, music (vocal or instrumental), drama, or dance.
Must be accepted by an accredited college or university.
Must be in the upper 1/2 of their class.
List all activities and awards in the field of art, music, drama or dance while in high school.
Describe how this award will help you in achieving your educational goals.

Owen M. Johnson Scholarship

The Owen M. Johnson scholarship was added, starting in 1989, to recognize a senior who had excelled in academics and all-around good citizenship. Owen M. Johnson was born in 1901 and raised on a farm in Boone County. In 1927, he married Marjorie Carroll, whom he had met

when they were classmates at the University of Chicago’s Law School. While few women attended law schools in those days, Marjorie Carroll had excelled at debate competitions while a student at Huron College in South Dakota and at the University of Southern California, as well

as during her studies at the Chicago law school. The Johnsons started their legal careers in Chicago, he working for a large bank and a law firm, she working as a law clerk to judges on the U.S. Court of Appeals.

In 1935, the Johnsons moved to Belvidere, where they remained for over 50 years, during most of that time practicing law together. Both were very active in the community, serving on public boards and their churches. They also maintained a much-loved residence adjoining the family farm south of Capron on which Mr. Johnson had been raised. Their three children attended Belvidere public schools and went on to achieve success in college and professionally.

Excel in community service and participation in school activities.

The Marjorie Carroll Johnson scholarship was established in 1987 to recognize a Boone County high school senior who had excelled in public speaking or performance. Owen M.
