Priority Standards
MU:Pr6.1.8b: Demonstrate performance decorum (for example, stage presence, attire, behavior) and audience etiquette appropriate for venue, purpose, context, and style.
MU:Pr4.1.6.I.6c: When analyzing selected music, read and identify by name or function standard musical symbols (for example, rhythm, pitch, articulation, dynamics).
MU:Pr4.1.6.I.Ib: Demonstrate or analyze, using music reading skills, how compositional devices of musical works impact and inform prepared or improvised performances.
MU:Pr4.1.IIIa.: Develop and apply criteria to select varied programs to study and perform based on an understanding of theoretical and structural characteristics and expressive challenges in the music, the technical skill of the individual or ensemble, and the purpose and context of the performance.
MU:Pr4.1.IIId.: Perform contrasting pieces of music demonstrating as well as explaining how the music’s intent is conveyed by their interpretations of the elements of music and expressive qualities (for example, dynamics, tempo, timbre, articulation/style, phrasing) as developmentally appropriate.
MU:Pr5.1.IIIa.: Develop and apply criteria, including feedback from multiple sources, to critique varied programs of music repertoire selected for individual and small-group performance, create rehearsal strategies to address performance challenges, and refine the performances.
Grading
It is our belief that every student is capable of achieving high levels of success in music. All students are expected to complete all in-class activities and homework.
The student and teacher will work collaboratively to develop a grading contract for this course. Students will be evaluated against the priority standards/scales based on the mutually developed contract. The following list represents a sample of suggested projects and tasks:
SEMESTER 1
-Develop and reflect on rehearsal strategies through a rehearsal log
-Analyze musical scores and lead sectionals
-Develop and direct warm-up exercises for the ensemble as a whole
-Analyze, select, and program a musical piece for a concert
-Co-teach a musical work with the instructor
-Keep a conductor's journal analyzing and reflecting on other conductors
-Conduct a musical work at a formal, public performance
-Complete other written tests (theory, musicology, etc.)
SEMESTER 2
-Develop and reflect on rehearsal strategies through a rehearsal log
-Analyze musical scores and lead sectionals for multiple parts
-Develop and direct warm-up exercises for the ensemble as a whole
-Analyze, select, and program multiple musical works for a concert
-Teach a complete musical work from start to finish
-Keep a conductor's journal analyzing and reflecting on other conductors
-Conduct a musical work at a formal, public performance
-Complete other written tests (theory, musicology, etc.)
