Dear Diamond Lake School Families,
As part of our commitment to keeping students and staff safe, and in accordance with the Illinois State Board of Education, Diamond Lake School will be conducting a required Safety Drill this Friday, September 26.
During a Safety Drill, classrooms are secured by locking doors, turning off lights, and moving students and staff away from doors and windows so they are not visible. Lockdowns are practiced to prepare for situations in which there may be a threat to safety inside the school building, most commonly if an intruder were to enter. The purpose of the drill is to ensure everyone knows how to respond and remain safe until the situation has been resolved.
The Lake County Police Department will be on site to support our drill and to help us review safety procedures. Below is an outline of the steps that will take place during the drill:
The Principal will make a building-wide announcement to begin the lockdown.
Students and staff will gather in a secure, lockable room.
Staff will lock doors, turn off classroom lights, and close curtains if available.
Students and staff will remain quiet and out of sight.
Police and the Principal will check each door to confirm it is locked and note any safety issues.
When the building has been checked, an “all clear” announcement will be made, and classes will resume as normal.
Practicing safety routines is an important part of being prepared. We also encourage families to review and discuss safety plans at home. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) provides excellent resources to guide families in creating and practicing home safety plans with children. You can access these resources by clicking HERE.
Please note: due to the Safety Drill, the DLS main office will be closed from 8:00–8:45 a.m. on Friday, September 26.
Every day at DLS matters!
Keep shining and #SparkleOn,
Mrs. Sunny Morley
