Students are working primarily in fiction texts right now. In knowledge we are reading a series of tall tales and fairy tales right now and learning about the fantasy genre and the concept of exaggeration. In skills they are reading a short chapter book as we develop their understanding of story structure and elements.
They are working within the units to develop the following skills :
Ask and Answer questions about a grade level text
Locate key details within a passage
Identify the meaning of grade level vocabulary words using context clues
This month students are reviewing adding and subtracting within 20. They will be exposed to a variety of strategies to improve their number sense and develop their mental math strategies. Students will work to master two or more strategies that they can use to solve equations independently going forward.
Students are working primarily with the scholastic magazine this month to learn more about relevant current event topics and develop their understanding of print sources.
Further social studies will be embedded in their CKLA units throughout the year.

In writing, we will begin with an narrative writing unit. Students will learn to develop an outline for a short story and develop it further using specific details. They will also begin to learn about the writing/editing process and how to "publish" a final copy of their work.
