The United States under President George W. Bush labeled the situation a "genocide" in 2004. This was the first time the US declared "genocide" during a crisis.

Current Events

In 2005, the situation in Darfur was referred to the International Criminal Court (ICC). See details of the various charges here Then-president of Sudan Omar Al Bashir was the first person to be charged with genocide. He remains at large.

On April 5, 2022, the trial of Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-Al-Rahman began.
