Baptism & Confirmation

If you're interested in participating or having your congregation participate,

please contact licensed lay catechists, Ann McGraw or Whitney Robinson.

What is Confirmation?  How do I know if I'm ready?

In the Episcopal Church, Confirmation is when “those baptized at an early age are expected, when they are ready and have been duly prepared, to make a mature public affirmation of their faith and commitment to the responsibilities of their Baptism and to receive the laying on of hands by the bishop.” Book of Common Prayer p.412

What if I'm not baptized yet?  What is Baptism?

You can take this course and at the end choose to be Baptized and Confirmed at the same time (or not at all).

Baptism is full initiation by water and the Holy Spirit into the body of Christ and the Church.  Five promises are made: to continue in Christian fellowship, resist evil, proclaim the Good News, serve Christ in all persons, and strive for justice and peace.

Is there a minimum age to participate?

At least 6th grade, but preferably when you, your parents/guardians, and any clergy assigned to your congregation believe you are ready to take on "the responsibilities of your Baptism" or to make the five promises listed above.

When will this class meet?

Youth will gather online with their mentors approximately once a month (timeline will be determined by participants).

What will be required of me?

There will be independent prep work ahead of a session (either a short reading or videos to watch) as well as a task or experience to follow each session, typically at church, and hopefully with the help of clergy or parishioners.

Is there a cost?

We ask that everyone purchase this resource:  My Faith, My Life, Revised Edition: A Teen's Guide to the Episcopal Church by Jenifer Gamber.  If you are unable to purchase this book for any reason, please let us know and we will get you a copy.

Do I have to wait for the Bishop to visit my church to get confirmed?

No, you can choose to be confirmed at another visitation made by Bishop Brian Seage in the Diocese of MississippiBishop Seage's Visitation Schedule

What will this class cover?

Understanding Baptism & Confirmation, the Bible, history of the Church, our creeds, worship & sacraments, prayer, and more!

Who will teach this class?

This course will be primarily facilitated by licensed lay catechists, Ann McGraw and Whitney Robinson with the help of other teachers and clergy from around the diocese.
