What are districts required to do to comply with Michigan's Read by Grade Three Law?
Screen all kindergarten students within the first 90 days and all 1-3 grade students within the first 30 days of school with an MDE-approved assessment. Click here for the approved initial assessment list.
Conduct an extensive (diagnostic) assessment for all students who are below benchmark. Click here for the extensive assessment list.
Create an IRIP (Individualized Reading Improvement Plan) to outline a plan to address and instruct the students' specific areas of need, and determine how their progress will be monitored, and share it with parents/guardians.
Students scoring 1271 or below on the Grade 3 ELA M-STEP will be identified as having a reading deficiency and be provides with at-home resources to help support their reading achievement.
CEPI will mail a notification letter directly to parents of students identified as having a reading deficiency.
At a minimum, districts are required to utilize their ISD K-5 Literacy Coach. The DIISD currently has 3 K-5 Literacy Coaches on staff.
For grades K-4, the legislation requires a Read-at-Home plan and support for families to help address the reading deficiency.
