Recently AI tools such as Chat GPT have become much more accessible and these, used correctly, have the potential to support your revision.
For example:
AI can condense lengthy texts into clear summaries, saving you lots of time and helping you grasp key concepts quickly.
They can turn text into tests - Struggling to test yourself? AI can generate quizzes based on your study materials, putting your knowledge to the test and highlighting areas that need more focus.
AI can spark your creativity - Imagine having AI generate information to create mind maps, flashcards, or model answers for your subjects – ways to add more variety to your revision programme.
This is a rapidly growing area and so new tools will come available very quickly. This page looks at how to effectively make the most out of tools like Chat GPT and Google Gemini.
Chat-GPT (13+)
This AI powered chatbot was developed by Open AI. It can simulate human-like conversations and answer questions on a wide range of topics. Students can use Chat-GPT to get instant answers to their queries, seek clarification on complex concepts, or have interactive study sessions with the chatbot.
However, remember, AI is a tool, and like any tool, you get out what you put in.
Effective Prompt Engineering is key. Think of prompts as instructions for AI. The clearer and more specific you are, the better the results. We have created the "How to Prompt Effectively" guide below that uses the PARTS model.
For example, instead of a vague prompt like "Tell me about biology," try something like "I am a GCSE AQA Biology student. Please summarise the key differences between mitosis and meiosis in a format that I can then use to create a mind map".
Google Gemini is another similar tool (in the UK this is targeted at 18+) where the same principles of effective prompt engineering apply.
Tips for Using AI in Revision
Don’t Replace, Enhance: Remember, AI isn’t a shortcut. It’s most effective when combined with your traditional study methods.
Find the Right Tools: Explore popular AI study aids and find which features work best for you.
Talk It Out: AI is great, but don’t underestimate the value of discussing your work with classmates and teachers.
Parents: How You Can Support
Stay Informed: Research AI study tools together. Explore how these can help your child study more effectively and boost their confidence.
Encourage a Balanced Approach Balance AI tools with traditional study methods.
Set Boundaries: Technology can be addictive. Help your child develop a study schedule that promotes balance and healthy tech habits.
As with all AI use its important to use it responsibly, ethically and to ensure the accuracy of the information you are producing. If using AI for revision follow our "Using AI Responsibly Guide" graphic below:
So, unleash the power of AI and take your revision to the next level! Just remember, AI is there to support your learning, not replace your hard work.
It is worth noting that ChatGPT is not appropriate for children under 13. While they have taken measures to limit undesirable content, ChatGPT may produce output that is not appropriate. ChatGPT is not available in school for year 7 or 8 students for these reasons.
