Monday -- Reading April 13

Sight Words - BINGO - I am sending home several grids for you to use. Write a sight word in each square. Next, give your child some counters and read one of the words out loud. If your child can find the correct word, she gets to place her counter in the square. When she has completed a row or a column, she has won the game - bingo! The kids that know all of their Sight Words can play bingo to refresh their minds. Make a sheet for each color.write them in pencil so you can move the words around.

Question of the Week - Why do we see shadows?

We're learning about shadows . We will learn that we need light to see shadows. The sun is a source of light. When an object blocks the light from the sun, a dark area, or shadow, appears on the sidewalk.

Look at the lights in this picture. The shape of each light is a circle. The lights are round. What is the shape of the lights? Is this the same shape as the traffic lights? Yes, it is. The shape is also a circle. Find or draw a circle shape. Hold it up and say this is a circle. It is round. The shape of the face of the clock is a circle. The face of the clock is round. Hold up a triangle. Say this is not a circle. Show your child different objects and have them tell you if they are a circle or not.

This shape is not a triangle. It has four sides and four corners. Show them several different shapes and have them tell you which one is a triangle.

( by counting what each one has)

Math -Naming Shapes:Rhombuses

This shape has four sides that are the same. It looks like a diamond, but I call it a rhombus. These shapes with fours sides and four corners are rhombuses. This square is really special. Draw a variety of rhombuses, some skinny and some fatter. Include a square rectangle. Make sure all side are the same length. Then draw a kite with longer sides on the bottom than the top and tell them that this shape is not a rhombus because all sides are not the same. Have them go and look for some rhombuses in the house.

Science - Why Do Shadows Change?

Ask your child this question: Why do you think the size of a shadow changes during the day? If they can tell you great. If not go outside at different times of the day and let them see their shadow and how it changes. Talk about it.

Lesson Plans for the week of March 30 - April 3

Monday -- Reading March 30

Sight Words - Here is an activity for those students who are still working on their sight words.

Make strips of paper and write each sight words on a different piece. Place the piece of paper into an Easter Egg and send them on a hunt. As they find each egg have them open it up and read the word to you. Once they have finished maybe they can have a snack or watch a cartoon or something fun that they enjoy.

For those that know all of their sight words they can do this too as a review and it can get them outside in the fresh air. But it will take 53 eggs to do all. Or create something else to use.

Book - A Tree for all Seasons- first listen to the story then answer the following questions.

Look at the photos in the book and summarize what each season is like. For example, have them tell one fact that they learned by using this sentence . Name of season is when____________________________________.

Have your child pick two seasons and tell what is alike and what is different about the two.

Math - Counting 10 fingers

Have your child start counting with their index finger and end with their thumb all the way to 10. Then ask them to show you 4 fingers, 6 fingers, 2 fingers etc. as you go through all the numbers to ten. If they are having a problem then repeat that number several times .

Do counting to 7 worksheet -- count and color 7, count and circle 7.

Science

Have your student listen to the story "A Tree for All Seasons" again and have them tell you how each tree is different and what do spring trees look like as we are entering into Spring

Reading

Book - A Tree for All Seasons - listen to it again and do the following activity

Have your child act out activities they do in each season and pretend to put on different kinds of clothing as the weather in each season changes.

Art lesson- watch the video above with the lady on it so you will know what to do.

After you have made your tree make it too look like your favorite season by coloring your branches or adding construction paper to it. What ever works the best for you!

Tell your child that they are in the season of winter. Have them imagine what the weather is like and what type of clothing they would be wearing. Do that for each season.

Take 10 beans or 10 of something and let your child make groups that add up to 10.

Take your child outside and show them a tree. Point out that the tree is growing in the ground. Talk about how its roots grow deep down under the tree. In the winter, it is covered in snow.

I wonder whether a tree grows best in sand, soil or gravel. What do you think? Have them make predictions and give reasons for their ideas. If you have seed have them plant seed in the different types of materials and observe what happens over time.

Have your child listen to the story again. In the story, the boys are thinking about summer and winter. Have your child discuss details in the illustrations, such as snow falling in winter, that show things in the sky. We can tell about how the sky changes in each season. When might we see snow ? When can we see rain in the sky? When do we see leaves falling from the trees?

Make up stories of making ten. It's chilly and the leaves are changing colors. The tree has 6 red leaves and 4 yellow leaves. How many leaves are there in all?

Social Studies

I have a yard at my house. In spring, we plant a garden. In summer, we mow the lawn. If fall, we rake the leaves. Workers have roles that change with the seasons. In winter, they might drive a snow plow. In spring, they might plant flowers. Talk about other jobs that happen in the seasons.

Discuss situations with your child about sharing something .

Give your child 10 items of something and have them share it with your or a sibling by giving each equal parts. If 10 is to hard start with 2, then 4 and work your way up to 10.

Have your child find things in your house that can be recycled and have them tell you which bin they would go in. Example: newspaper in the paper bin, plastic bottle in the plastic bin.

Book -Think Green! - listen to it again and do the following activity

Have your child draw a three-column chart on a piece of paper. You will need to write the titles for each column: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Have your child page through the book and find ways they can care for the Earth. Have them dictate ways to reduce, reuse and recycle, as you write their ideas underneath the corresponding categories.

Watch video on blending again if needed. Practice on the following words: ten, sock, rug, net, hat, and bat

Give your child a couple of different items that they could use as storage bins. Have them tell you which one would hold the most and why? Which one would hold the least and Why?

Math - Sharing Fairly with Leftover

Now give your child and uneven amount of beans. Ask them to divide it equally between you and him. then ask How many beans do I have? Let's count and check. I want to share these fairly with someone. How would I do that? Then ask them to offer suggestions how they think that would work. If your child is confused tell them that we would lay it on the side since we couldn't divide it equally.

Science

When you throw something away, you make garbage. Too much garbage can harm the Earth. When you recycle something, it can be used again.

Put different type of recycling items in a bag. Have your child find all the things that are made of plastic, and place them in one bin and continue with the other objects. Then ask them if any of the items were hard to tell what they were made out of.

Today we will think more about ways we help the Earth. Draw a picture of those way Whatever they can think of have them draw that picture.

How can a sea creature be harmed by garbage?

What plastic things do you recycle at home?

Would you rather draw on a poster or talk with friends about taking care of the Earth?

Show how you can separate glass, plastic, and paper in recycling bins.

If you were the leader of a recycling team, tell what you would do to care for our planet.

Math-Recycling and Sharing Stories

Have your child tell you a recycling story.

Now I have 3 bags and 6 cans to recycle. I want to divide the cans into three bags. How can i divide them up equally. How many cans are there in each bag?

Social Studies

We can use some things over again instead of throwing them out. Have your student think of these that can be reused instead of throwing them away.

Days of the week and months of the year we do when we do the calendar everyday so they should know the hand motions to those songs. Going on a Bear Hunt is one of their favorites to act out.
