Monday -- Reading May 11

Sight Words -Pick your favorite game and play it or just read your words!

Question of the Week - What are the different ways thins move?

We will be learning about how things move in different directions and at different speeds. I can take a toy car and push it down a ramp. It will move fast. Questions? - Why would something move fast or slow? Does going up or down affect how things move? How do you stop things from moving? How do you start them?

Book - Oscar and the Cricket- first listen to the story then do the following activity -- Have your child act out how Oscar makes objects move.

Directions :Have them circle which one is different, which one rhymes with the first picture, which one begins with the same sound as the letter, find the matching capital letter to the lowercase letter, trace over letter in the box then repeat it 3 times.

Do Worksheet - Beginning Sound Zz --Color the pictures that begin like zoo.

Math - Comparing Long and Short steps

Tell your child that when you say go to take long steps. Then have them do the same thing with small steps, Then ask them which took them longer to get to the end, Long steps or short steps??

Science -

In our story Oscar's ball does not use electricity to move. What made it start to roll?

Explain that toys that need batteries use electricity. Use a flashlight with its batteries out to demonstrate that some things do not work without batteries.

Have your child tell you what toys they have that do and do not use electricity.

Question of the Week - What are the different ways thins move?

Ask your child this question: Will a moving thing slow down or go faster if it goes up a ramp? When you kick a ball , will it start or stop moving? Is it harder to pull a wagon up a hill or down a hill?

Book -Oscar and the Cricket- listen to it again and answer the following questions

When your child listens to the story pause it when the following words come up and have them demonstrate them. push, roll, pull, sway, jump, and run

Read the question in the first box, have them circle the number of objects in this box then trace the number 3 times. Then circle the number of items of the number that is showing. then draw a line to the box on the right that matches the box on the left. Then have them cut and sort the items at the bottom.

Math -Comparing Longer and Shorter

Have your child walk around the house or outside and pick two objects to compare which one is longer and which one is shorter.

Do Worksheet - writing numbers

Science

Show your child how we can measure things using our footsteps. Then tell them things they can measure using their footsteps. Then talk about others ways to measure something.

Math - Comparing Lengths of paper chains

Have your child compare the length of any two chains.

Do worksheet - Color by number.

Social Studies

Roll a ball across the floor. - How did I make the ball move? That's right! I pushed the all, and that caused the ball to roll.

Bounce the ball off the wall. What happened? (ball bounced and came back) The effect is that the ball bounces when it hits the wall.

Have your child find 3 different objects with one of them being a ball. Once they have their objects tell them to move it by pushing it, rolling it, and bouncing it. Then ask them Which way do you think is fastest?

Monday -- Reading May 4

Sight Words -Play Sight Word Concentration - cut a piece of paper into squares that are the same size. Write your sight words on two piece of that paper you cut up. Continue doing that with the rest of your words. Then mix them up and turn them over. When you find the two that matches say that word out loud.

Question of the Week - Why can't we hold on to shadows or reflections?

Let's think about what shadows and reflections look like. I can see my reflections in a puddle of water. It looks like a picture of me. Questions? - Have you seen a reflection in a puddle? Have you tried to hold on to a refection? Where can we search for shadows and reflections?

Book - The Puddle Pail - first listen to the story then do the following activity -- click link at the bottom of Monday. Pause while your child is listening to the story and have your child suggest additional "I wonder" statements as they listen to the story,

Math - Creating Shapes

If you have shapes use them. If not then have your parent cut out two triangles just a like. Tell your child these are triangles. Ask them, what will happen if I slide them together? Slide the triangles together to form a large triangle. What shape is this? What shape can I create if I turn the triangles and then slide them back together? I made a square rectangle. Let your child see if they can make any other shapes.

Listen to the story The Puddle Pail again. Have your child answer the questions. Where does this story happen? (at the beach) What else do you see at the beach? (ocean, waves, sea shells, birds etc)

Next have your child look outside and tell you what they see.

Question of the Week - Why can't we hold on to shadows or reflections?

Ask your child this question: Do you need a light or dark place or make a shadow? Can you see the shadow of t tree on a wall or a sidewalk?

Why does the size of a shadow change?

Why can't you hold a shadow?

We learned how to put shapes together to make a new shape. Today we will break apart a shape in order to make other shapes. Display a rectangle made of 3 square. Your can use sticky notes, cut outs or shapes you already have.

Let's look at the pictures in The Puddle Pail. What happens to the reflections in the puddles when Ernst moves? (They Change) Have your child hold a mirror and move it away from them. What happens when I move the mirror away?(The reflection moves too) Now have them move the mirror close to their face. What happens to the size of the reflection?( it gets larger)

Book - The Puddle Pail - listen to it again and do the following activity

Have your child draw a picture of themselves and hold it up. You can hold a picture, but you can't hold a reflection of a shadow. Talk to them how a reflection or shadow disappears.

Math - Creating Rectangle Shape Quilts

Give your child a rectangle they can trace. On the back of one of the worksheet have them make a rectangle quilt. Turning the rectangle around to have it going different directions. Then have them color it different colors.

Remind your child how Ernst was collecting puddles and putting them in a pail. Then ask them: Have you ever stepped in a mud puddle? Have you ever touche a puddle? What did it feel like? Write their response down on a piece of paper. Have you ever touched something that was warm? How did it make you feel? What did you do? What about touching things that are cold?

We have learned how to make shapes using other things. Today take a piece of string (any kind yarn, shoe string, etc.) See how many different shapes you can make using string!

Have them walk around outside to look up at the sky 3 different time of the day to see where the sun is at. Have them tell you what they see.

Have your student retell the story and answer the following questions:

How is a sparkly reflection like a picture?

Name something that is not real.

What size is your shadow when you move close to a light?

Tell why you cannot hold a shadow or a reflection.

Why does a reflection in a puddle disappear if you touch the water?

Math-Naming and Tracing Circles and Rectangles

Have your child listen to the story again Whistle for Willie and as they show the pages have them see if they see anything that is in a shape of a triangle or rectangle.

Social Studies - I Want, I Need

What did Ernst collect in The Puddle Pail? (shadows, puddles) Did Ernst need the puddles, or did he just want them? That's right, he wanted to have some kind of collection, but he didn't really need them in order to live. Explain that sometimes we have wants, but we also need things in order to live.

Let's brainstorm some of the things that we need to have in order to live. Then we'll think about some of the things that we want, but don't really need. Make a chart of the things they tell you Need/ Wants
