Language Arts overview
Throughout the year we will use a variety of resources as we explore the wonderful world of Language Arts, which encompasses reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
In this class, you will
• Read both fiction and nonfiction texts using short stories, novels, poems, etc.
• Work with words: roots/prefixes/suffixes, vocabulary development, figurative language,
spelling, & grammar usage
• Utilize various modes of writing
• Perform & speak in different settings
Grading INformation
Students will be graded on daily work, tests, writing assignments, projects, presentations, and independent reading/AR (students should be reading 20+ minutes EVERY NIGHT). Grades are earned, not given.
What is Accelerated Reader (AR)?
All students will be required to read books at their level take quizzes using the Accelerated Reader program. Students will have quarterly AR goals that are part of their overall Language Arts grade. Novels read in class DO count towards AR goals. Parents can sign up for the “Home Connect” feature to monitor their student’s progress.
How does Accelerated Reader work?
You are graded on your achievement of your quarterly AR goal (these goals will be set together in class).
Books should be at a 3.0 level or higher.
You must read the entire book before taking the AR test on it. Additionally, you may not take an AR test if you’ve only “seen the move”. Audio books are ok, as long as you follow along in the book as you listen.
You may not take an AR test more than once per book.
You may not help other students with tests or share answers.
You may not talk to other students while testing.
Tests must be taken during class-time independent reading time.
Mrs. Moffett must see you reading the book in class if you plan to test on it (see #9 for the exception).
If you read the book over the weekend or entirely at home, you must bring the book and discuss it with Mrs. Moffett. After a satisfactory discussion, she may grant you permission to take the AR test for that book.
AR goals are due on the last day of each quarter.

Students are expected to follow the 3 R's:

*RIGHT CHOICES
Consequences are cumulative and operate on a "3 strikes" system:
Strike 1 - Verbal Warning
Strike 2 - Verbal Warning
Strike 3 - Behavior Report (ODR)
*Extreme disruptions will result in immediate removal from the classroom.
From 8:00am-2:50pm, personal electronic devices (cell phones, iPods, iPads, tablets, etc.) should remain OFF and in a locked locker, because neither the school nor I are responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged devices.
