Spring Book Fair Brings New Technology to the Library

March 2017

A big thank you to the Baker Tiger Family! With the help of our parents, students, and staff, we were able to exceed our spring book fair goal. Besides many new books for our collection, we were able to purchase a document camera for our library. With this new technology, we can project books and other manipulables from a table onto our big screen. Now everyone in our classes will be able to examine objects and illustrations in much greater detail. Thank you for helping us bring this 21st Century technology into our library.

Henrico Police Visit for Read Across America Day

March 2017

Volunteers from Henrico Police read Dr. Suess books to our students in celebration of Read Across America Day on March 2. With ten visitors ranging from the Commonwealth Attorney to current and retired officers, our students were excited to greet our guests.

Preschool Construction Zone

February 2017

During their construction unit, our preschool students enjoyed several building themed books and learning stations. They used a variety of building tools including play dough, craft sticks, stacking cups, and nuts and bolts to create free standing structures.

4th Grade Digital Breakout

February 2017

Our 4th graders participated in a Lego Civil War themed digital breakout activity. Digital breakouts are web-based adventures where students must uncover the secret codes in order to escape a room or unlock a treasure. In our digital breakout, students had to uncover the secret location of the lost gold of the confederacy by searching for clues in our library databases. By analyzing text features, such as subheadings and photo captions, they were able to solve the mystery!

The Story

4th Grade Scratch Animations

January 2017

Our 4th grade book club students used MIT's Scratch website to animate conversations from the novel Revolution on Wednesday, a title from the Magic Tree House book series. Not only did students have to read and understand the book, but they also began reading and writing in a new computer-based language. By programming conversations, students had to use cause and effect strategies. When one character speaks, the other must remain silent. You can try to create your own animated conversations in Scratch using this resource.
