“You're never alone when you're reading a book.” ~Susan Wiggs
For as long as I can remember, I have loved reading books and spending time in local libraries. After twelve years of teaching sixth grade English, I discovered my favorite part of the day was reading to my three-year old daughter at bedtime. I was ready for a new adventure, so in 2016, I obtained my library certification from Old Dominion University. Now I am excited to share the world of books with our students at Baker Elementary School.
As a librarian, I believe all students learn differently, and I try to provide a variety of activities that appeal to multiple learning styles. I am a strong proponent of 21st Century Skills; if you peek inside our library, you will see students engaged in collaboration, developing their creativity, researching the answers to their own questions, and communicating with the world beyond our classroom walls. Besides
Besides reading, I also teach baton twirling. I love building video games, film-making, sewing, and spending time with my family.
Education
“A child who reads will be an adult who thinks.” ~Unknown
Reading is wonderful! I am approaching my 15th year in Henrico County Schools as a library assistant. I am also, a graduate of NC Wesleyan College where I earned a degree in Business Administration. I previously worked in the corporate world, relocated to Virginia, and landed in the school system.
It is very rewarding to listen to a first grader read aloud, having a reluctant reader excitedly explain the plot of a book that they’ve read, or being informed by a group of fifth graders of the latest school “drama” and offering an encouraging word. I hope to inspire students as they come in and out of the doors of Baker Elementary’s School Library to read books that are not only “popular “ but to discover books that are personally interesting and amazing.
In my free time , I enjoy going to concerts, festivals, and exploring with my husband. I also, have two wonderful adult children who can attest to their mom’s love of children and reading.
