Teaching students to ask questions not only builds greater comprehension but also teaches them to become inquisitive, life-long learners. The 10-5-2 teaching strategy invites students to be the ones asking questions about any topic presented. This training module will walk staff through the steps of leading a 10-5-2 while practicing from the student side. This strategy will make a great addition to content classes and works well for grades 4th and up. This routine could also be modified for grades 3rd and below by allowing the students to discuss the questions with the teacher being their scribe.

This badge is designed for teachers who want to incorporate a long-term book study into their regular curriculum. This offers teachers a chance to learn how to use cross-curricular work that supports the concepts and standards they are already teaching as part of their district-approved curriculum. Teachers will be asked to choose a text that supports or compliments their instructional content. Once a text is chosen, a teacher will need to create the following items:

Part 2: Planning Template - A writing template that assists students in planning to write their own BOOK REVIEW. The template should include the following:
A method for students to take notes to create a SUMMARY of the book in question. Every good review starts with a basic, concise summary of the events of the book.
Basic information about the book: title, author, publisher, etc.
A method for helping students develop a "HOOK" to engage a potential reader.
A planning portion that helps students EVALUATE the text
It should cause students to reflect on: genre, characters, setting, theme, pacing, etc.
What impact did the book make on the student?
A reminder that SPOILERS should be avoided in the review.
A planning portion for constructing a recommendation by the student.
Who should read the book? Why?
Who should not read the book? Why?

When students struggle with writing, sometimes we can feel lost looking for our next move. Take this challenge as an opportunity to learn new strategies to help your students’ writing skills grow by using Jennifer Serravallo’s book The Writing Strategies Book. Serravallo’s book isn’t a book you just sit down to read, her book is one used at the moment. This module invites staff members to obtain The Writing Strategies Book and utilize the new strategies in the classroom. Staff members will be able to show their newfound skills by taking images of their work, maybe an anchor chart or student template, and attaching it to the assessment portion of this module. Incorporating strategies from this book is a sure way to improve writing from grades PreK-8th Grade. Please study and use the material and then fill out the SUBMISSION FORM by attaching artifacts to earn THE WRITING STRATEGIES BOOK LEVEL 1 BADGE.
