On January 20, 2021, the 46th president of the United States, Joe Biden, was sworn into office. Biden participated in the traditional inauguration ceremonies first by attending church with his wife and his vice president Kamala Harris and her family. This church is known as “The Church of the Presidents” because most incoming presidents attend service at this church on the morning of their inauguration. Biden delivered a speech at the Capitol Building where he talked about how the nation needs to come together and unify. Additionally, he talked about how he will work just as hard to support the citizens that do not support him as he will for the citizens who do. He also mentioned that the nation has a long road ahead with the COVID virus but assured that the nation will get through this and times will get better. This year the inauguration featured performances from Lady Gaga who sang the national anthem, Jennifer Lopez who sang “This Land is your Land'' and “America the Beautiful”, Garth Brooks who sang “Amazing Grace”, and Katy Perry who sang her famous song “Firework” during the evening firework ceremony. This inauguration also included Amanda Gorman, who is the first-ever youth poet laureate of America, and spoke about unity and improving America for everyone. Along with the normal festivities that occurred during this presidential inauguration, there were new monumental events such as Kamala Harris being the first vice president who is a woman, of color, and of South Asian descent. Additionally, this was the first inauguration in over a century where the previous president did not attend the ceremony. Finally, this inauguration was different because a much smaller group of people attended due to COVID, and everyone who was there was wearing masks which is still a new sight to see at big events. Amongst the people who attended were former presidents Obama, Clinton, and Bush, all honoring Biden. The previous vice president Mike Pence also made an appearance. Overall, this inauguration went smoothly and we now have the 46th president leading America.
