Elliot Page Reveals They are Transgender

Canadian actor and producer Elliot Page took to social media on December 1st announcing that he is transgender and that his pronouns are he/they (meaning the two pronouns can be used interchangeably). Page is known for his roles in awarding winning movies such as ‘Juno’ and ‘X-Men: Days of the Past’ and for his character “Vanya” on the Netflix series ‘The Umbrella Academy”. The Oscar-nominated actor revealed to fans that he is non-binary, a gender identity that is not man or woman. In the note he put up on Twitter and Instagram, he wrote about how he is extremely grateful to be in a position where he can come out and is supported by those who love him enough to share his true identity with us. Though expressing his gratitude, he also wrote about feeling fearful within this letter to fans. “Despite feeling profoundly happy right now and knowing how much privilege I carry, I am also scared. I’m scared of the invasiveness, the hate, the ‘jokes,’ and of the violence,” he states. Elaborating on how staggering statistics are for transgender youth and adults are, he mentions political leaders who have no regard for them and that these people in power who “continue to to spew hostility towards the trans community” have blood on their hands. On the upside, Page promises to do everything he can using his privilege to change the world for the better. Many people have wondered how this will affect Page’s role as Vanya Hargreeves but he has explained that it won’t. He will continue to play the character as is since it has nothing to do with his gender identity.
