Kalinowski House is one of the nine houses here at DeSales High School. Ran by Mathematics teacher Mr. Dawson and World Language teacher Mr. Nieto, Kalinowski House shows the traits and characteristics that DeSales men strive to be, emphasizing faith, brotherhood, and tradition. Kalinowski House’s mascot is the Kings, which symbolizes power, strength, and coordination. In this article I’ll talk about Carmelite saint Raphael Kalinowski, (who the house is named after), the achievements Kalinowski House has accomplished, and what makes Elijah House special.
Raphael Kalinowski (born in 1837) was a polish Carmelite, social activist, and saint in the Catholic Church. He participated in the January Uprising, which called for the end of Russian imperial rule. Before he became a Catholic, he was a part of the Russian army. After the January Uprising, he left the Russian army because he did not want to fight, and for this action he was exiled. During his exile, he converted to Catholicism. He became well-known for preacher of the faith, translator, and theologian. He passed away in 1907 and he was later canonized in November of 1991. He is the patron saint of Siberian Catholics, as well as soldiers, engineers, and railroad workers.
The Kalinowski Kings have achieved many things together as a house, both in athletics and academics. Here is how they performed in the house cup last year…
6th place in discipline (2,350 points)
8th place in academics (1,256 points)
1st place in service (4,390 points)
2nd place in special spirit (4,495 points)
6th place in spirit (4,320 points)
2nd place in intramurals (4,600 points)
Overall, last year they finished 3rd place in the House Cup last year, with a total count of 24,411 points. Looking back into their history, Kalinowski House has only won the Desales Intramural Basketball League (DIBL) once, back in 2018. The Kings have won the House Cup five times in their history, winning it all in 2018, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2025.
