Brandsma House is one of the nine houses here at DeSales High School. Led by History teacher Mr. S and Theology teacher Mr. Hoehler, Brandsma House illustrates the qualities and characteristics that DeSales men strive to be, emphasizing faith, brotherhood, and tradition. Brandsma House’s mascot is the Bulldogs, which symbolizes strength and being part of a pack together. In this article I’ll talk about Saint Titus Brandsma, (who the house is named after), the achievements Brandsma House has accomplished, and what makes Brandsma House special.

About Saint Titus Brandsma
Titus Brandsma was born on February 23, 1881, and he was a Dutch Carmelite priest and a professor of philosophy. He went to high school when he was only 11 years old, and after he pursued a more religious life, he was ordained a priest in 1905. His most famous acts was during the rise of Nazi Germany, he vehemently opposed to Nazi ideology and fought for more education and freedom of press. After the Germans invaded his homeland of the Netherlands, Titus Brandsma was arrested and sent to a concentration camp in 1942, where he was murdered shortly after. Saint Titus Brandsma illustrates extremely strong courage because he spoke out against Nazi ideology even though he knew he could have been arrested and killed for it.

2nd place in academics (3,488 points)
7th place in service (2,100 points)
8th place in special spirit (1,315 points)
7th place in spirit (3,330 points)
7th place in intramurals (1,598 points)
Overall, last year they finished 7th place in the House Cup last year, with a total count of 17,641 points. Looking back into their history, Brandsma is a two-time Desales Intramural Basketball League (DIBL) champion, winning it all in 2014 and 2022.
