Going into this season there were some worries around the starting lineup for the Colts. The previous senior class had major contributions and took up a lot of roster spots. With the loss of those major contributions left a lot of new opportunities for the underclassmen.
The season started with 2 difficult games against Oldham and Nelson County. While these games were 2 losses, they showed the team some areas of growth. In the week following against Nelson County, the Colts put in a lot of work and improved on the errors from the previous weeks. Then, in week three they went on the road and beat rival Holy Cross. That game was a very gritty and hard fought game. It was one of the most hyped games of the season because the Colts and Cougars haven’t played in over 7 years. The Colt took the momentum from the Holy Cross into the following week against KCD.
It was a hard fought game against a top 1A team. Ultimately, the Colts lost that game and looked ahead to the following week against Southern. The Colts won 44-0 against Southern in a very memorable game for the quarterback, as Cameron Bischoff broke the school's all time career passing yards record. Then after that good win the Colts would take on Bishop Brossart which was another great win with the score of 35-7.
After playing Bishop Brossart, the Colts had a very difficult game against CAL. This year CAL was a top 10 team in the state with some rare talent on offense. The Colts ended up losing, but learned some valuable lessons they would take into the following week. The following week was a big game for the Colts. They played at home in a lights out game against Southern. The Colts won this game 63-0. After beating Western in a great team win, the Colts then traveled to Central High School and lost but this was all good because they learned and went back to work at practice the next week. The final week of the season Colts traveled to Anderson county and won a really wet and muggy game which gave the Colts momentum going into the playoffs.
The Colts traveled to Garrard County for the first round of state. It was a hard fought battle as the Colts got the win. It was a challenge for the Colts because one of their receivers got hurt. This injury forced the Colts to play people in positions they never played and still walked out of Garrard County with the win.
With that win the Colts then moved on to the second round of the playoffs. They had to travel to CAL and play the centurions. The Colts lost and their season was over, but the Colts fought hard even though it was not enough to leave with the win.
If there is something to note from this season is next year everyone around DeSales should be super excited for next season. The Colts showed their grittiness this year and showed their fight. The Colts fought hard and had a pretty good season finishing 6-6. Over the season, the Colts improved their ranking to 89 in the state. While some of the seniors were battling injuries, Cam Bischoff and Kingsten Merritt both had a historical season. After a great season, what’s next?
