The past 2 weeks have been very monumental for the USA as both men and women’s Olympic hockey teams won gold. This is only the 4th time a country has ever swept both hockey events. Canada is the only nation to ever complete the sweep and they managed to complete it 3 times. This year both games were won in overtime with a score of 2-1 against Canada. In overtime the teams get limited to having 3 players plus the goalie on the ice at once.
The USA women’s team dominated this year’s Olympics by only allowing 2 goals the entire tournament, and scoring at least 5 goals in every game all the way up to the finals. In the finals game, Canada started very strong by scoring the first goal. In a last ditch effort, the USA pulled the goalie to have an extra attacker, and scored with 2:14 left in the game. Once the game went into overtime, the Americans took advantage by scoring the winning goal within the first 4:07. Caroline Harvey received the tournament's MVP and best defender.
The USA men’s team also dominated the Olympics by scoring at least 5 points in the first 3 matches. The Americans had a scare against Sweden when they tied up the game and went to overtime. The Americans were able to defeat the Swedes and dominate the semifinal game with their eyes set to beat Canada. The gold medal match was set for February 22 which was 46 years since the "Miracle on Ice.” The USA started strong by scoring the first goal at 6 minutes in the first period. After the goal, the Americans had to play strong defense as the Canadians had a 5-3 player power play. The USA didn’t allow the Canadians to score during the entire 2 minutes of the power play. With 1:44 left in the second period, Canada was able to score a goal to tie the game. After this goal it was a very defensive rest of the game for the USA sending the game into overtime. The Americans took advantage of the overtime 3 on 3 rules and scored the winning goal within the first 1:41. Connor Hellebuyck was named the tournament's best goalie and blocked a total of 41 shots by Canada.
