Kentucky is coming off a 30-23 loss to Ole Miss. In this game Zach Calzada threw for 149 yards on a 15/30 campaign. He is currently ranked T26th in the SEC in touchdowns and hasn't thrown one yet, and yes there are only 16 teams in the SEC. If Kentucky wants a slimmer of hope they have to start Cutter Boley before it’s too late.
Now before I start I want to first of all say I don't think it's all Zach’s fault. Bush Hamdam is to be blamed as well. He can’t scheme up anything to get receivers open consistently and his calls in certain situations are very questionable. I mean we ran a QB draw on 3rd and 9 just to get stopped at the line of scrimmage and then proceeded to snap the ball on 4th and 9, when I thought we we’re gonna call timeout and throw it out the end-zone when we just needed 9 yards. The only good thing about the offense has been the running game but you can’t win in the SEC when you have no passing attack. If we can start to throw the ball better this will set up the run and we can play more to our strengths. As of right now though it looks like Kentucky's passing attack might need a lot of work.
Now here is why Zach is also another big person to blame and arguably more than Hamdam. Zach is not an accurate quarterback. The only throws he can make are screen passes and drag routes. He is something like 2/19 on throws 15+ yards. He brings nothing to the table and has no upside. Now people will argue that the receivers aren’t open and Hamadan can’t get them open and I partly agree, but he missed open receivers multiple times in the Ole Miss game. He had Hardley Gilmore open twice for a touchdown if he just made the throw and put it on the money. If he can’t throw the ball downfield and can’t find open receivers and virtually brings nothing to the table why are we starting this guy.
Why Cutter should start. First of all he is just flat out the better quarterback. When he came in the game the first pass he made was a decent pass but good enough to get a pass interference call, when some of Zach’s throws aren’t even catchable, so we can’t even get a pass interference call. The second throw he made he almost hit Willie Rodriguez in the end zone for a touchdown but he was under pressure and still almost made the throw. On the next drive he hit Hardley Gilmore over the middle and had to put the ball in a tight window, a throw I haven’t seen Zach make yet. I know he only threw three passes but they all looked better than anything we’ve seen from Zach. In the Preseason camps there was also a lot of people saying Cutter looked better. Now this could be true, but Cutter was also running against the 2's so this made it easier on him. We also know last year Cutter had his ups and downs but still looked solid for a true freshman behind the worst offensive line that has been put on a football field. Cutter is also the future whether we like it or not. This bringing in an old guy out of the transfer portal isn’t working. It worked when we had a 2nd round draft pick at quarterback and a NFL head coach at OC. But times have changed. I think if we give Cutter the rest of the year to start we will have a better record than what we have with Zach, and we for sure know the starter going into next year and it’s a guy who’s been in our system and is comfortable.
In my opinion if Cutter starts the rest of the year it might not save us, but I think he’s the better option. It will also shape us for the future better. I think he needs to start this week for Eastern Michigan and get good reps or it will become too late.
