Where we were before.....
Since 2010, the English Department of San Roque National High School has been implementing its Reading Program which was incorporated in a regular English Class for students from all year levels. The students were asked to read some selections from different high school textbooks. After reading the selection, students answered questions to determine their reading comprehension level in getting the main idea, making predictions, drawing conclusions, interpreting figurative language and finding word meaning in context.
Pre-test using the Mc Call Crabbs Test was given to all students at the beginning of school year to determine their level of reading comprehension. Test results were analyzed.
Based on the results, S.Y. 2013-2014, showed that in Third Year four (4) were in Grade 4 level, seventy-four (74) were in Grade 5, one hundred twenty-three (123) were in Grade 7, and twelve (12) in Grade 8 level. These students underwent the mass reading as an intervention.
Last June 2014, the opening of S.Y 2014-2015, Mc Call Crabbs Test was administered as Pre-test. Result showed that out of the 252 Third year students last year, now in Fourth Year, only ten (10) students remained in the Striving level. Three (3) of them were in Grade 4 level and seven (7) in Grade 5.
With this, SRNHS CI Team aimed to intensify the reading program for these students who are now in the Fourth Year level to help them develop and improve their reading comprehension skills and prepare them for their further studies.
