LEARN ABOUT THE HISTORY AND EDUCATION
The Aetas, pronounced "eye-tas," are among the Philippines' earliest known migrants or inhabitants. The majority of their population has managed to preserve their cultural practices and traditions over the years. However, as one of the country's indigenous groups, they face challenges such as displacement, marginalization, and poverty.
Aetas have been denied basic services and have been unable to communicate their requirements to the government. It would ideally advance indigenous communities' knowledge without jeopardizing the Aetas culture and indigenous knowledge system.
LIFE AND CULTURE
The Aeta are short and slender, with dark skin; their average height is 1.35 to 1.5 meters; their frame is petite; their hair is kinky; and they have large black eyes. Later migrants are thought to have driven them into the Philippines' highlands and hinterlands, where they are thought to be the country's first settlers or aborigines.
COVID has severely harmed indigenous peoples' traditional livelihoods because they are unable to go outside to continue gathering non-timber forest products, but illegal loggers have also exploited indigenous peoples' resources in their community during the quarantine.
COMMUNITY-BASED CHARITIES
In line with HIPAC's strategy of focusing more on particularly vulnerable indigenous peoples in Asia, such as hunter-gatherers in transition, HIPAC began supporting a project last year implemented by another organization, Tulungan sa Kaunlaran ng mga Aeta Foundation (TUKAF) to strengthen Aeta communities in Tarlac Province, the Philippines.
HIPAC contributed 45 tablets, eight computers, and food items. The donation is intended to assist students in dealing with blended learning when classes are held both online and on campus. Project Lipad is pleased to collaborate with Converge on this donation, especially since the Aeta community in Pampanga continues to struggle with online learning. The aim is "to continue to support our Aeta brothers and sisters by providing them with access to digital devices as we build a better home for them."
The MGKSKRC Foundation, a charitable organization founded in 2022, raises funds to benefit the indigenous Aeta tribes of the Philippines and to repair the devastation caused by Mount Pinatubo's volcanic eruption.
"We dream of changing the lives of the indigenous Aeta people who are thirsty for water and hungry for food. We have taken several meaningful steps already, but with your help, we can continue our operation."
