Long before, Barrio Namunit , the most progressive barrio of Buguey, Cagayan has been created as the seat of the Municipality of Sta. Teresita in June, 1963 by virtue of Republic Act 3768 only a few of the graduating pupils of Namunit Elementary School enroll in high schools in some municipalities in Cagayan and rarely, others enroll in Ilocos Provinces.
Not all of those who enrolled in high school were able to complete their secondary education because of the distance of theses secondary schools from Barrio Namunit and with the kind of transportation the place during those times.
With the full vision of the municipality officials of Sta. Teresita to strengthen the education of the people, the Sta. Teresita Barrio High School was created in 1966 through the initiative of the late Laureano Javier, Municipal Mayor and the Municipal School Board.
Upon the creation, the newly created barrio high school was then a sister of Camalaniugan High School under the supervision of Miss Rosamila Mendoza as Principal and the late Mr. Eduardo S. Savella as Assistant Principal. The school was situated at the Sta. Teresita District occupying a two-classroom building.
Executive Order # 189, which calls for the nationalization of all existing 189 schools has changed the originally known Sta. Teresita Barrio High School established in 1966, became Sta. Teresita Barangay High School in 1976 into Sta. Teresita National High School.
The school was primarily opened to provide the school children in the locality with a free secondary education accessible to all children of school age. It aims to develop the school children to become morally upright, economically secure and become productive citizens of the community.
With the vision of the Municipal Officials of Sta. Teresita to strengthen the education of the people, the Sta. Teresita Barrio High School was created in 1966 through the initiative of the late Hon. Laureano P. Javier, Municipal Mayor and the members of the Municipal School Board. This newly created Barrio High School was then a sister school of Camalaniugan High School under the supervision of Miss Rosamilla Mendoza as Principal and the late Mr. Eduardo S. Savella as the Assistant School Principal. The school was situated at the Sta. Teresita District Elementary School occupying a two-classroom building.
Politicians from the provincial, municipal, and barangay levels were so supportive, hence, from a very small school having its operation under the umbrella of the District Elementary School, the Sta. Teresita Barrio High School became independent erecting its own building at a lot located on the Northern part of the Poblacion which was donated by Don Luis Florentino, the owner of Hacienda Florentino. It is surrounded with rice fields turned to residential lots due to the fast growing population of the community. West of the school is the Namunit creek which is connected to the sea, thus, the occupation of the people near the school is mainly farming, fishing, and small scale business.
The school was primarily opened to provide the school children in the locality with a free secondary education accessible to all children of school age. It aimed to develop the school children to become morally upright, economically secure and become productive citizens of the community.
By virtue of the Executive Order No. 189 mandating the nationalization of all 189 Barrio High Schools, the originally known Sta. Teresita Barrio High School established in 1966 became Sta. Teresita High School in 1976 and its name was changed to Sta. Teresita National High School with the support of the following Municipal Mayors: Hon. Gabriel P. Sevilleja, Sr. (1970-1980) - elected, Hon. Bernoli P. Arquero (1980-1987) - elected, Hon. Anastacio T. Avila (1987-1988) - appointed, Hon. Francisco C. Sevilleja (1988-1998) - elected, Hon. Marco Francisco Sevilleja (1998-1999) - elected with Mr. Rodolfo S. Abbang as the Principal of the school until June 2005.
Because of its desire to cater the needs of school children in the remote areas, the school has established its extension school at Sitio Bangalao, Barangay Luga, Sta. Teresita, Cagayan originally named as Sta. Teresita National High School Luga Extension with the support of the Municipal Officials headed by Atty. Romeo S. Garcia and with the initiative of Mr. Luciano U. Asuncion, Head Teacher III. It started its operation in June, 2004 with 25 first year students until it became a complete secondary school, with one Head Teacher, Mr. Luciano U. Asuncion who worked hand in hand with the Municipal Officials for the successful establishment of this school and four nationally funded teachers borrowed from its mother school.
It was formally declared as an independent school changing its name to Luga National High School on February 18, 2010 through the collaborative effort of the Municipal Officials headed by Atty. Romeo S. Garcia, Municipal Mayor and the following DepEd Officials: Benito S. Tumamao, Ed. D., CESO III, Regional Director, Lorna B. Manauis, Ph. D., CEO VI, Schools Division Superintendent, Nimfa A. Alagao as the School Principal from August 2009 to March 2012.
After Mr. Abbang’s retirement, Mrs. Violeta T. Ibera, Master Teacher II became the Officer-In-Charge for several months. Then came the late Carmelita Sambrano, Principal II who had a very short stay in this school because of her tragic death due to car accident on her way for a staff conference at Aparri in February 2006. After the leadership of the late Sambrano, Eleazar L. Rabaja, Ph. D., Principal I became the head of the school until 2008 where Mrs. Mary Ann C. Madrid, Master Teacher II took charge as Officer-In-Charge until August 2009.
The Sta. Teresita National High School has a total enrolment of 828 students. It has enough school buildings to hold classes but these buildings need to be renovated and repaired in order to become a more conducive place for learning.
It has 29 full time quality teachers, three Head Teachers, five Master Teachers, one Administrative Asst. III, and one Administrative Asst. II, one Guidance Counselor and two PTA-Funded school guards. Four of the Master Teachers were promoted principals of other schools thereby giving opportunities to the next-in-rank teachers to take their positions as Master Teachers. Among them are, Mrs. Violeta T. Ibera, Principal III, Mrs. Mary Ann C. Madrid, Principal II, Miss Rose M. Macapulay, Principal I and Mrs. Virgie P. Lagundino, Principal III, who after having been assigned as Principal I of the Baua National High School in August 2008, became Principal II of Pattao National High School in August 2009 and came back to serve her town mates as Principal III in march 12, 2012.
Despite the cultural and religious differences among the people living in the feeder barangays and the nearby barangays of adjacent municipalities, the school was able to establish a good working relationship to attain its vision, mission, goals, and objectives, thus, teaching-learning process is smoothly improving academic achievement of the students.
The operation and management of the school is dependent on government allocation and has established a wide network with the different stakeholders—the PTA, the LGU, and the community to carry out the implementation of programs, projects, and activities to achieve its ultimate goal of improving school’s performance.
The Local Government Unit headed by Hon. Mayor Lolita C. Garcia and other politicians in the national, provincial and barangay levels, are very supportive in extending material, and financial support to all programs, projects, and activities of the school, thereby producing graduates who are able to conceive a better society for their succeeding generations and who will contribute to national development.
