PHIL IRI (FILIPINO)
The Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI) is a national assessment tool developed by the Department of Education (DepEd) to measure the reading proficiency of learners in the Filipino language. It is designed to help teachers identify students’ reading levels, strengths, and areas that need improvement.
Assess Reading Skills: Determine learners’ ability to read and comprehend texts in Filipino.
Identify Reading Levels: Classify students as Independent, Instructional, or Frustration level readers.
Guide Interventions: Provide data for teachers to design remedial programs and reading interventions.
Promote Literacy: Support DepEd’s goal of improving literacy rates and ensuring learners meet grade-level standards.
Phil-IRI typically includes:
Oral Reading Test: Measures fluency and accuracy.
Silent Reading Test: Evaluates comprehension.
Listening Comprehension Test: Assesses understanding when text is read aloud.
The Filipino component ensures that learners develop strong reading skills in the national language, which is essential for:
Understanding academic content.
Preserving cultural identity.
Building foundational literacy for lifelong learning.
