HISTORY OF JOHN J. RUSSELL MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL

JOHN J. RUSSELL MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL formerly known as SIBUL SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL (SSHS) is one of the four secondary public schools in the town of San Miguel, province of Bulacan. The school is located at the footsteps of the Sierra Madre mountains in Barangay Sibul Springs, a place endowed with natural beauty and a community supportive of all the school’s endeavor of educating its young people. Under the leadership of Ms. Emma Sta. Ana, then a district supervisor with cooperation of the Municipal Council Head headed by Mayor Marcelo G. Aure and the barangay officials, the school was established. Its inaugural class started in 1968 with 50 students handled by two teachers, namely Filipina Sayas-Magdangal and Felicidad Velayo-Sarmiento. The school shared its facilities with Sibul Elementary School (SES) funded by the municipal and barangay councils. In the year 1987, the school was categorized as nationalized high school.

After twenty years of stay in the elementary school compound, SSHS had fortunately acquired its own lot in 19889through the effort of Ms. Teresa Tuazon, the granddaughter and heiress to the late John J. Russell, a known philanthropist and businessman who decided to live in Sibul Springs during the American period. It was under the leadership of Mrs. Araceli D. Baluyot that the 10,000 square meters school site donation was developed with the aid of local officials, teachers, parents and students.

The first deed of donation stipulated that the memory of the land donor, the late John J. Rusell, shall be perpetuated. Mrs. Lucena Torres continued the efforts of Mrs. Baluyot as the Sibul Springs High School was legally renamed as John J. Russell Memorial High School in 2002.

John J. Russell Memorial High School is continuously developing and producing citizens who can compete with the changing world of the twenty-first century. It is a student-friendly school covering a total land area of 19,686 sq.m. and is serving almost eleven (11) surrounding barangays namely: Sibul Springs, Tartaro, Sta Ines, Buliran, Calumpang, Malibay, Masalipit, Kalayakan, Kalawakan, Camias and most recently, Barangay Tubigan of the nearby town of Dona Remedios Trinidad (DRT).
