HISTORY OF DEPED DIVISION DANAO CITY

By: Rolando N. Lawas
Division of Danao City was created and started its operation in SY 1962 - 1963, a year after Danao became a chartered city. The first appointed superintendent of the Division was the late Mr. Leocadio Momongan.
When Mr. Momongan retired from office, the late Mr. Esteban Ypil – academic supervisor in English, assumed the office as OIC. Later, the late Mr. Catalino de Lana was appointed as the second Schools Division Superintendent.. Due to his retirement, the late Mr. Marcos Munez – academic supervisor in Social Studies, assumed the office as OIC until the late Mr. Simon Fernan was appointed as the third Schools Division Superintendent. Mr. Fernan served the office until SY 1972 – 1973.
After 10 years of operation, Division of Danao City was dissolved and was merged to Cebu Province Division, due to the number of teachers that could not met the DepED’s minimum requirement of 500, resulting to the deployment of its academic supervisors and personnel to the different offices in DepEd Region VII .
In January 22, 2003, after 30 years of merging to Cebu Province Division, DepEd Secretary Edilberto S. de Jesus formally declared the restoration of the Division of Danao City during his speech at the Danao Civic Center attended by city officials headed by Mayor Ramon “Nito” D. Durano III and DepEd Region VII officials headed by Director Carolino B. Mordeno. Dr. Michael M. Cono, chief of ALS of DepEd Region VII, took his oath of office as the first Officer In-Charge of the Interim Division of Danao City which is administered by the Secretary of Education.
The restoration of the Division of Danao City in 2003 was through the concerted effort of Mayor Ramon “Nito” D. Durano III and the Sangguniang Panglungsod, former Congressman Joseph Ace H. Durano (the then Secretary of Tourism), and the then Congressman Ramon “Red” H. Durano VI.
Dr. Michael M. Cono officially acted as OIC-Schools Division Superintendent of Danao Division on January 1, 2003. It was during the time of Dr. Cono, in 2004, that CVIRAA (February) and Regional PRESS CON (October) were held in Danao. In March 12, 2006, Dr. Michael M. Cono was transferred to Lapulapu Division and was replaced by Dr. Arden D. Monisit.
