APARRI WEST CENTRAL SCHOOL
HISTORY
HISTORY
In the early 30’s, there were few families who lived along the rice fields where fresh water fish were abundant for food.
Everyday some members of the families go up the hill to gather dry twigs, branches and stems for firewood. The families who lived in the place were Ibanag speaking people.
The Ibanags called the place where they gather firewood “voguic” which means hill in the English language. In those hills, there were guava tress and other fruit bearing tress which were edible. The abundance of fruits in the place attracted the inhabitants to roam around the place often.
Several years after, people from Ilocos Region came to the place and migrate. Their migrations therefore to the place cause the intermarriages of Ibanags and Ilocanos. From that time on couples started to build their homes. In quite a time, there was an increased in population that paused a problem on the education of their children. At first, children of school aged are en rolled in the nearby barangays like Zinarag, Paruddun Norte and Mabanguc. People from Voquic were hard up because there was no road to follow. All their way was only trail. Sometimes they lost their way causing them not to report to school on time.
Due to that problem, the Barangay Officials including the community people thought of putting up a school where their children could acquire elementary education.
Putting up a school building is not possible without a lot, so there were four (4) bonafide residents of the place who offered their lot for the school and they are the following; Mr. and Mrs. Agapito Cartagena – one (1) hectare, Mr. and Mrs. Pablo dela Cruz – one (1) hectare, Mr. and Mrs. Aniceto dela Cruz – one (1) hectare and Mr. and Mrs. Pedro dela Cruz – one (1) hectare, a total of four (4) hectares for the school lot.
So in January of 1948, the community folks started to gather materials for the construction of a school building. Due to their interest and enthusiasm of having a school for their children, in short time they were able to construct a four – room building by the end of May 1948. They did not stop constructing until they were able to put up a home economics and industrial arts building before the start of classes.
The barangay and community people thought of adapting a better name for the school not Voquic. Majority of the group agreed to adopt Bukig Elementary School instead of Voquic Elementary school. Therefore the registered name is Bukig Elementary School. It started its formal operation in June 1948 as a complete elementary school offering Grades I – VI.
In 1990, the seat of the District was transferred from barangay Paruddun Norte to Bukig due to insurgency problem thereby making Bukig Elementary School the new site of Aparri West Central School.
The existence of the elementary school in the place contributed to the present metamorphosis in the lives of the Bukiguenos.
