As the world is fighting against the COVID-19 outbreak, more than 130 countries have now closed schools nationwide, impacting nearly 80% of students globally. This is unprecedented; the world has never seen this many child out of school at the same time.
By now, we have already proven that being stuck at home for way too long is not easy especially for our dear learners. We know that we have been in the same struggle and now, we've probably thinking, “When will this quarantine period end?” What happens if this gets extended and we get cooped up again for months? That is where this creative project comes in.
QuaranThingsToDo is a project that might help our dear learners to get away with boredom rather than spend too much time on Facebook, Tiktok, play mobile games or even binge watch movie series.
QuaranThingsToDo literally means “Things to do during Quarantine”. Because of the worldwide pandemic brought by COVID 19, most of our cities and municipalities declared quarantine restrictions. Those children ages 15 below are advised to stay at home as part of the health and safety protocols implemented by the Department of Education (DOH).
Since children are advised to stay at home, most of their activities are doing household chores and any other activities that can only be done inside the house. According to studies, whether we like it or not, household chores are a necessary part of everyday life, ensuring that our homes continue to run efficiently, and that our living environments remain organized and clean, thereby promoting good overall health and safety even in this time of pandemic. Involving our young generation in household chores gives them opportunity to become active participant in the house. They begin to see themselves as important contributors to the family.
QuaranthingsToDo is not just limited on doing household chores at home. As it suggests, anything that are beneficial for learner's growth can be used for this innovation. Giving importance to the multiple intelligence, our news generations have a lot of different skills that are evident in their daily lives.
They can showcase their talent in writing, painting, speaking, sewing, or simply giving time to take care of their younger siblings at home. These are all significant at home during pandemic time. It is expected that learning will take place because practical application of what they had learned in school can be seen.
This QuarathingsToDo has a lot to offer for the growth of our learners:
Cleaning the Room
You stay in your room for around 12-18 hours, if not ALL DAY, every day. One way to start off with this innovation for students is to have a nicely-organized room. Once you see that your favorite place to stay in is clean, pleasant and perfectly-set, you’ll lose your slappy, lazy mood and you’ll engage in more productive activities.
Make Time for Passion/Hobbies
This is a perfect chance for our learners to start doing tasks like writing a book for instance, or sending inspiring/encouraging letters to a friend, drawing a portrait that they’ve always been wanting to give to the person dearest to them, or reading recommended books. No matter what it is, its always a win to make time for their crafts. Plus, they’ll get to be better at it, too!
Help out with House Chores
Doing task like cooking breakfast, washing the dishes, sweeping the floor, feeding the dogs, wiping the windows, re-arranging the sala set, or disinfecting house are very significant activities at home. It might not be a fun activity for them, but helping parents or siblings with household chores is a worth cause.
Spending Time with the Family
For almost every day that passed before quarantine period came, learners spent most their time in school or at work. Quarantine is the best time for them to make it up for their grandparents, parents and siblings.
Being Updated and Act
Ignorance is not an excuse; hence, as they say “Knowledge is power”. Young generation must learn to have a concern for their environment. These hard times may help them to involve in donating, helping out with packing of relief goods, crafting and giving out DIY PPES, sharing positivity and great accomplishments of the government or speaking up for the oppressed through social media platform. Fact-checking of all the information is very important.
Daily Devotion
This season is the perfect time to get to know the Creator in a deeper way. This daily devotion will help our learners to find peace of mind and heart knowing that this pandemic is somehow stressful and fearful.
