The dawn of Capitan Elementary School started after the World War II and was opened in 1949 through the leadership of Hon. Graciano Battung, Municipal Mayor of Iguig. Formal education was given to children and adults of Barangay San Esteban, San Lorenzo and Sta. Barbara. There were more than 40 pupils then, regardless of age who studied at a School Building made of cogon and bamboo which was initiated by the officials of the community headed by Barangay Leiutenant (Tenyente) Ventura Egipto. The teachers then were Mrs. Teodota N. Penaflor and Mrs. Teodota M. Penafiel. The needed education was then shared by the teachers to the Grade 1 pupils.
In 1949, the school building was burned, so the children continued to learn at the Barangay Leiutenant’s house. In this time, Grade 2 was opened and Mrs. Mendoza was the teacher. The pupils had the opportunity to learn in Grade III and IV since at the same year, the grade levels were opened. Mrs. Freida B. Maralli and Mrs. Natividad Agustin were the teachers.
In 1957, the community and the local government tried to rebuilt the burnt school building, but due to insurgency, there was a swapping of school location. This happened under the leadership of Hon. Santiagho R. Penaflor. During this time, the Grade 5 and 6 pupils enrolled in the Central School.
In 1967, Capitan was still a Primary School until 1979 wherein Mrs. Virginia Maralli handled Grade I and II teaching the basics of reading, writing and ‘rithmetic; while Mr. Dominador Maralli taught in Grade 3 and 4. However, the school lacks Grade 5 and 6, so still the pupils needed to enrol at the Central School. The school then was named “Capitan Primary School”.
During the administration of Hon. Juditas L. Trinidad in year 2011 through the leadership of the school principals Mrs. Maricar P. Pamittan and Mrs Mabelyn S. Cordova, Capitan Primary School was changed to Capitan Elementary School since it offered a complete elementary education and Kindrrgarten wassd also opened. This happened under the leadership of Barangay Chairman Reynaldo S. Verbo.
At present, the community ,where the school is located, was the main clientele of Capitan Elementary School. There are teachers in every Grade level and learners are being taught in the essential education they need for their future.
