HISTORY OF PACAC PEQUENO

Amulung is a third class municipality in the province of Cagayan, Philippines. It is composed of 42 barangays and is divided by the Cagayan River – thus Amulung East with 18 barangays where the seat of the local government is located and Amulung West with 24 barangays where the Municipal Sub-Office is located. And one of its smallest populated barangay is Pacac Pequeno.

Accordingly, it was founded in1802. Its name was derived from a tree called Pakak, a family of jackfruit tree which was abundantly thriving in the place. It has a total land area of 4, 971.502 hectares which includes rice fields, corn fields and residential area. The main products are corn and rice. Tobacco was once

part of the main produce before the 21st century.

Currently, Barangay Pacac Pequeno has a total population of 1, 180 of which 591 are male and 589 are female. From this number it has 206 households which is equivalent to 291 families. Located more than five kilometers north-south of Cordova, there lies the quaint Pacac Pequeno Elementary School. with the desire to break illiteracy among community folks, Pacac Pequeno elementary School was instituted school year 1995-1996 by no less than the brains, the three-termer municipal mayor, the Hon. Atty. Nicanor C. De Leon with the help of internal and external stakeholders. It has an initial population of 45, combined as grades I and II.

Before its establishment, three-fourths or most of its earliest learners were enrolled and graduated in Palayag Elementary School while other pupils had enrolled and graduated in Masical Elementary School.

Later, a complete elementary school was streamlined and granted. After six school years of operation, it had bore its first graduates in 2001. The school had improved and is continuously improving through the help of the community folks, internal and external stakeholders, non-government organizations, LGU Amulung and other civic-oriented individuals. Through the years its population also grows every school year. For this pandemic school year, it caters 232 pupils.

The following were the teachers – in – charge who managed the school:

1. Loida Catuiran – 1995 – 1998

2. Nelia Soriano – 1998 – 2001

3. Delaida L. Saquing – 2001 – 2006

4. Flordeliza B. Pascual – 2006 – 2012

5. Charisa A. Paguila – 2015 – 2020

In October 2020, Principal II Mr. Benjamin B. Battung from Palayag, Amulung, Cagayan was welcomed to Pacac Pequeno Elementary School by virtue of a move from the Division Office of Cagayan. He is currently working with seven teachers namely: Lea May Martinez, kindergarten teacher, Carina Joy M. Narag, grade I adviser, Rochelle O. Capili, grade two adviser, Ryashelle D. Buted, grade three adviser, Maricel M. Costlaes, grade four adviser, the lone resident teacher, Jordan O. Donato, grade five adviser, all teacher III and Domingo D. Since March 2020,one of the youngest barangay chairmen in Amulung, Rosevelt Batarina through the law of succession now manages the barangay after the death of the long-termer Barangay Captain Sotero Maguddayao. Velaria Soraino Maguddayao, the deceased’s wife has also been in the throne for three terms and more. The couple have been exchanging in the position since 2000. The folks wanted them to lead the

barangay because of established reputation and credibility in local politics.

With Rosevelt Batarina are the following barangay council men who were elected into power in 2019: Patrick Battuelo, Judimar Pacquing, Racleo Tejano, Sherilyn Tejano, Julio Dulin, Marilou Maguddayao and Velaria S. Maguddayao.

Itawes is the major dialect of the barangay folks. Some are Ilocano-speaking, few are Ibanag-speaking and still few speak Tagalog (those who have been affiliated).

At present, people have been educated thus the growing number of professionals in the field of education, police service, broadcast media and office works in either Manila, Tugueagarao City or in other places here in Cagayan. At present, one student is enrolled in University in Sto. Tomas, Manila while twelve are enrolled in the different colleges and universities in Tuguegarao City. All high school students are enrolled in Pacac Grande National High School or in other high schools in the district.

At present there are seven sari-sari store owners, one farm supply store owner and one ambulant ice-candy vendor. There are two jeepney operators, Kag. Racleo Tejano and Rosita Bolibol.

Most of its residents are farmers, some are tenant-farmers and labourers. Few are carpenters and still few are house helpers. Some of its residents specifically strong-willed mothers are now working abroad due to unemployment here in the barrio while others are working in Manila or have migrated in other places due to work, family or other related conditions.

As per record, the barangay is free from incidence of crimes, human-induced hazards for the past 13 years until an incidence of rape was recorded in 2019 which made Pacac Pequeno in the limelight.
