Facilities & Technologies

One of DePauw’s distinctive Centers, the Tenzer Technology Center is a high-tech collaborative space, featuring some of the most powerful computers and cutting-edge technology on campus, where students from all disciplines enhance their technology, computing and visualization skills to support their personal and career aspirations and prepare to work and live in a diverse and global world.

IN JANUARY OF 2023, THE TENZER TECHNOLOGY CENTER MOVED INTO THE NEWLY RENOVATED ROY O. WEST LIBRARY. SPANNING THREE FLOORS, THE FULLY REALIZED CENTER OCCUPIES MORE THAN 11,000 SQ FT.

Roy O. West Second Floor

Most of the Tenzer Technology Center's footprint exists on the second floor of Roy O. West Library.

Maker Lab

The Maker Lab (ROW 202) is a glass-enclosed space dedicated to 3D printing. Located within are three LulzBot Mini 2 and three LulzBot TAZ Workhorse 3D printers. The Maker Lab is equipped with fume hoods that run 24/7 and various filaments are provided at no cost to the DePauw community.

Active Learning Classrooms (A and B)

The Center operates two active learning classrooms. Classroom A (ROW 205) contains 5 collaborative work tables and the ability for instructors and students to easily present group work on shared LCD monitors. Classroom B  (ROW 204) contains 21 high-performance Windows workstations for student use and an instructor's station; it is also equipped with five 86" monitors that allow students to see the instructor's content regardless of their location and orientation in the room.

Tech Lab

Equipped with several VR and AR headsets, the Tech Lab (ROW 203) currently focuses on XR technology but was built to adapt to future tech needs. Four high-powered workstations, a collaboration table and monitor capable of wireless display, as well as soft and agile seating such as beanbags and buoys round out the space.

Dogbones

Affectionately called the "Dogbones" because each resemble a real-world dog bone, they feature 10 high-performance workstations and high quality monitors for individual or group use.

Roy O. West First Floor

The Tenzer Technology Center also has a sizeable and central footprint on the first floor of Roy O. West Library.

Tenzer Wall

Measuring more than 16' wide and 5' tall, the Tenzer Wall (ROW 108) is a 7680 x 2160 touch-enabled video wall. It uses IR touch technology from PQ Labs and contains 8 bezel-less tiled LCD monitors from the Barco Unisee platform. Users can leverage the existing high-end workstation or plug in their own laptop(s).

Laptop Lab

The Laptop Lab (ROW 119) is a flexible space for workshops or other group functions. Mobile chairs and tables allow for a vareity of configurations while two synchronized 86" LCD monitors provide ample viewing opportunity for presentation material. The room has no fixed computers so users are expected to bring their own device.

Tenzer Lounge

The Tenzer Lounge (ROW 115) prioritizes student socialization and provides a fun connection to modern tech. It is home to several video game consoles such as Xbox X Series, PS5, Switch OLED, and PSVR2. Each console has open access to several games and students can use the space whenever the Roy O. West Library is open!

Other Offerings

Viewing Room

Located on the ground floor of Roy O. West Library, the Viewing Room (ROW 008) features a 130" projection screen accommodating laptop input and has 40 stadium-style tiered seats. It has no external light bleed and excellent acoustics to allow for comfortable film and video viewings.

Loanable Technologies

The Center maintains an inventory of advanced technology that is available for loan on a per-project basis to all DePauw students, faculty and staff. Available technologies include, but are not limited to, digital video and audio equipment, 360 degree media capture devices, and virtual and augmented reality gear.

Web Server

The Center operates a Linux server for student web development (including testing and/or deployment).

Tenzer Personnel

The Tenzer director (Michael Boyles) is located in ROW 201B. The Tenzer assistant director (Laurel Tilton '18) is located in ROW 114. Both have an open door policy and are available for walk-in appointments or discussions.

Policies and Procedures

Most Tenzer spaces, including labs, classrooms and open areas, are available first-come first-served anytime the Roy O. West Library is open and classes are not using them; they require no special access. Due to safety concerns, DePauw users must request keycard access and complete a simple training before using the Maker Lab on their own. Tenzer's loanable technologies and its web server are available on a per-project basis. Please talk to the Center's director or assistant director to discuss access and utilization in more detail.
