About DGS

A Growing School

DGS Southeast is an innovation school, located in southeast Denver. In its 10 years of existence, DGS has quickly established itself as both a "high-performing" and "high-growth" school with some of the highest growth scores in the district for all of our students. In addition to academic success, we are proud of our integrated projects, exciting excursions, and our diverse student body. Essentially, this is a school that prides itself on growth and excellence, abundance of joy, diversity, and loads of success through rigorous and relevant learning.

Innovation School

As an innovation school, DGS is able to do some things differently. For starters, we've found that our focus on preparing students to help create a more sustainable society is better served with a malleable curriculum and consequently we have a waiver to use curriculum that we select and create. Another key difference of our school is our distributive leadership model. DGS does not have principals and instead, a leadership team that currently is comprised of about 10 partners who handle leadership responsibilities. Each of these partners has teaching responsibilities, so DGS can really boast to be a teacher's school the promotes and values teacher empowerment and voice. A third difference of DGS is that we are an extended day school; students arrive at 8:00 am and finish up at 3:45 pm. That is except on Fridays, where students wrap up at 12:45 pm and staff engages in differentiated professional development. We are proud of our innovation model and work hard to make it work for teachers and kids.

Our Students

The most important part of our school, of course, is our students. DGS serves a diverse student population, not diverse in the sense of 95% of students identifying with one particular ethnic group but actual diversity. We have students representing about 30 different countries. As a Title 1 school, roughly 65% of DGS is free and reduced lunch which again, creates a mix of students that more accurately reflects the diverse city we live in. Like many schools in southeast Denver, we have been busting at the seems, and even though our school has had to decrease the number of choice students we accept, we still have some classes in the low 30s, which is more than we had hoped when we opened the school.

Our Staff

We are a fun loving crew with high expectations for ourselves and for kids. Check out what DGS staff has to say about why they love being a part of the team:

The Hiring Process

To be upfront, the DGS hiring process requires a commitment of time and energy for all involved. There are several steps in the process with each step serving as another opportunity for a candidate to prove their competencies as a teacher and team-player.

The process is broken into three different steps which are briefly explained below. The hiring process is explained in greater detail on the aptly named Hiring Process in Detail Page.

1 - Resume Review

Our hiring team sorts through the hundreds of resumes we receive to identify diverse teachers of promise.

2 - Phone Interview

Our 6-question, 20-minute phone interview covers a range of topics important to our school.

3 - Lesson Observation and Formal Interview

Candidates who move on to the final phase of the process are invited to DGS to teach a 45 minute lesson to our students and to participate in a 30-minute formal interview.
