Summer programs offer opportunities to take courses, improve your language skills, complete an internship, or conduct research. January-Term programs are typically shorter in duration and number of credits, but you can pack a lot into a couple of weeks. We have programs all around the world, including right here in the United States.
Students may consider programs that run during Winter Break, often called January-Term or J-Term programs. The dates of January-Term programs vary considerably, so you need to ensure your program ends in time to return to campus for the start of Denison classes in January. Programs that conflict with Denison's academic calendar will not be approved.
Because Denison does not offer a summer term or a January term, there is no financial aid available from Denison for summer programs, and students are responsible for all costs associated with the experience (including the summer OCS administrative fee to Denison). Many providers offer need-based financial aid and there are a number of outside scholarships students can apply for (e.g., Gilman Scholarship, click here under Scholarships for a list of options). If you are concerned about affordability of summer programs, please notify CfGP during the advising process.
We recommend that students look carefully at the costs listed on provider websites. When doing so, consider not just the program fee, but also other estimated fees (e.g., housing, food budget, local transportation, transportation to your host site). Summer students also pay Denison an OCS Administrative Fee. You can read more about our financial policy for summer and January-Term programs here (be sure to click on Summer and January-Term Program Applicants).
Summer programs often offer multiple sessions, so if you wish to keep costs down, consider attending a single session rather than two or three (but also keep in mind that some providers offer discounts if you do more than one session). Typically, the more credits you wish to earn over the summer, the higher the costs will be, so you should think carefully about the number of credits you need/want to transfer back.
When searching for summer or January-term programs, you are asked to work with one of Denison's approved providers (see list below). However, you are welcome to choose any of the programs offered by these providers. Because new programs are often added, our summer and January-term programs are usually not listed individually on our Approved Programs page. Instead, you should go directly to the provider websites and search their summer and January-term offerings.
Note: Some of the links below will take you directly to a list of that provider's summer offerings, while others will take you to a main page where you will need to search specifically for summer or January-term offerings using the filters provided. Some of these providers offer a single summer or January-term program, while others offer many. Overall, there are more summer program options than January-term options.
* Providers offering January or "Winter" programs are denoted with an asterisk, but note that not all of these dates will work every year with Denison's academic calendar!
